It's true, why do you think killers keep getting nerfed every few days for no reason? They're not overperforming, it's that you get people like OP complaining and the devs rush as fast as they can to make sure survivor mains are happy no matter what.

Nope. They did it because one of if not the main reason for them releasing those cosmetics in the first place (which again, was stated in the initial announcement) was because of a technical issue with the cosmetics disappearing from people's accounts and the devs not having a reliable way to stop that from happening. The best solution they could come up with was to simply grant the cosmetics to everyone.
However, they later found a way to store the cosmetics securely so that that didn't happen anymore, so it was no longer necessary to give the event cosmetics out for that reason. The fact that they didn't want to devalue the effort people put into earning those cosmetics also played a part, but that had nothing to do with one random person kicking up a stink about it.
