Why do people depip or smurf?

Please don’t start with “ranks don’t mean anything,” because while rank isn’t a clear indicator of skill I think we all can admit/agree that playing against people of a lower rank than you should be makes the game easier.

If you’re a killer do you depip so you can guarantee yourself getting 4ks against potatoes survivors?

As a survivor do you depip so you play against “less sweaty,” killers?

If you do, I appreciate the honesty, but just try to realize you are making the game unfun for those rank 15s you’re bullying just like the sweaty try hards in the red ranks made it unfun for you.

What would other reasons be?

im trying to keep myself on R7-8 (+i have smurft too but about it later)

on survs i cant find way to play to not rank up (because of constant buffing emblems for survivors) so im stuck on red rank if i play

but on killer sometimes im playing sandbag wraith (3 perks and 2 addons that are handicapping me) or just normal killer but not killing anyone before 6th or 7th hook (and i never use ruin so it lowers gatekeeper anyway) or there are games where i dont kill at all (to not rank up)

why i do it? on surv to meet way less tunnelers, red+purple add on killers and tbh in over 2/3 of my escapes i have with item (almost 2/3 with new looted item) so when i dont loot anything good a lot of time i let killer kill me (if i feel they played fair)

on killer, games are slower so i can play playstyle i love which is hooking 6 or (its not that rare) 8 times before someone is dead. And you cant tell my de-ranking is toxic or anything, if you dont kill survs before 6th hook they had a lot of time to get bp/play the game, and emblems are supporting my playstyle i dont use slowdown perks, dont slug (gatekeeper is crushed), dont push kills (2nd emblem is crushed), ok 3rd and chaser i have almost every game gold+ but 2 emblems cant carry you to pip

why smurf? i have rank 17-20 friends, i wont make them play vs red/purple rank killer xd i dont want them to quit game because killer will sweat, and ofc i dont play serious on those ranks xd most of the time i let killer kill me

I play killer like you, or at least try. I aim to hook everyone once first for BBQ stacks then start in on second hooks although by that time the game is almost over against a decent team.

If I down someone after gates are powered I generally let them out as I feel they have “earned it,” at that point. Also as a survivor player too I know how huge those 5000 escape blood points can be sometimes

Yes I have depipped as a killer player to stay out of the high ranks with their sweaty toxic SWF groups. It's not fun being forced to play the same killers with the same loadouts or else you have to deal with the SWF groups saying the most vile things in post game chat and on your Steam profile page.

Now I try to rank no higher than the green ranks. It allows me to play low tier killers, play without addons, and just have fun. It's not like I'm bringing moris into every match and crushing noobs.

    To play against worse players.

That is always the derank reason.

Smurfs are in every game with a ranking system. They are the worst kind of player and person together with toxic people.

yup thats the point, play how you would like other players to play with you

but i like that thing when emblem system works with my playstyle in that way (on killer)

The game generates smurfs by itself. It's called rank reset. I've been rank 1 killer/survivor for years [about 3500 hours in the game] but I'm taking some sort of a break since as I'm currently more interested in other games. It will take a while till I become active again. By that time I will probably be green or yellow rank killer/survivor even though I clearly don't belong there.

Matchmaking by dbd-hours would be a decent thing but the devs won't do it anyways. They prefer meaningless ranks that you get by making matches artificially longer as killer and cleansing totems as survivor.

Played one match as killer yesterday before jumping back on Borderlands 3. 4k'd in 1 min 44 seconds. Safety pip. Guess I'm supposed to terrorize inexperienced survivors. Can't wait for rank reset to put me in even worse ranks just because I prefer playing other games for a while. Good thing there aren't rank rewards.

Killers are way too sweaty, and Survivors are pretty terrible no matter what rank you're in.

Now that red ranks get put at Rank 5, I've barely played at all this month. My plan is to just play very little so I start moving closer to rank 15 in a couple months.

What is a smurf? Actually I just try to depip when I go for killer adepts. In yellow ranks you just need 14 emblem points for the double pip and the latest killers don't really have any perks to help you with the gatekeeper emblem.

At the moment I'm purple ranks and with the Oni adept perks there is ALWAYS 1-2 gens done when I get the first hook. I try to get to green ranks until January 13th and "train" Oni with brown addons to depip. I would try to go down to yellow ranks for this adept but I really dislike Oni too much and I get too many killer dailies that push me up again

I'm waiting for rank reset as killer so I'll be 17. after a few days, all of my old levels other reseters should be gone, and I can maybe get that stupid evil Incarnate achievement. and maybe an adept while I'm at it

Im a lazy gamer, I prefer to be BELOW 12 (12-20) and just chill out. I could work my way up and rank. But I don't want to work hard. =D

Sadly, some Survivors/Killers do this for "ez wins" as some say. Either it's for their own amusement, or they actually can't handle the higher rank brackets. This is cause of skill or other reasons, but either way... if you're set at the rank, you shouldn't derank because you simply don't like it.

It's unfair to other Killers/Survivors that have to face you, since they're either not as skilled or fairly new to the game... and being pinned up against a higher tiered Killer/Survivor team can be quite a bad first impression for some newer players.

But you can't really DC anymore to do this, so we should see a lot less of it from now on... (when the DC penalty system is fully implemented)

I have a second account specifically to play with a very good friend who happens to be a potato Survivor. I have tried to play with her in red rank with two other friends but she dies very quickly and becomes frustrated. She loves escaping, so I usually spend time helping her and making sure she escapes and I die. I really have fun playing with her and that's all it's about for me.

That’s cool, I should get a second because on the rate occasion I play with my GF I know if she gets found it’ll be over fast. She doesn’t even have the basics of strategy down and isn’t a gamer. We’ve resorted to KYF with my two nieces and we all have to go easy on her

Kinda funny the lengths the people would do to Depip. You don't lose two pips for disconnecting anymore and the new rank reset makes it so that people who plays this game here and there would be in Red ranks.

Yeah this girl goes down after about 10 seconds. She literally goes into Lockers in the middle of a Chase. And doesn't ever look behind her so she often gets grabbed off the generator. I have the most fun playing with her and I always die. So I'm not toxic about playing with rank 20 killers. You should consider a second account, just be chill and have fun and it feels very different.

Probably so they can practice a new killer without getting obliterated by red rank survivors or maybe they just want chill matches and not try hard games. I can understand using a smurf for killer but using a smurf for survivor makes no sense since all survivors are just skins with different voices and don't have a unique skill that needs to be acquired to play them efficiently.

On console, as a green rank killer, you will face red/purple SWF teams almost every game, completely destroying you. Deranking is currently the only way to experience evenly matched games. It's sad. A rank 16 killer will consistently be matched against green rank survivors.

Dunno bout PC but console is #########

I think one of the reason people say ranks don't matter is because of depipping or smurfing. In other words, because of smurfs you'll encounter experienced players at any rank, which makes the system a bit meaningless. It's a shame that people can avoid playing with skilled opponents so easily.

It's simply more chill. It's done in every pvp game

  • johnmwarner
    johnmwarner Member Posts: 3,793

It’s done to play against people less skilled then yourselves. It’s the PVP version of playing Madden on rookie difficulty and beating teams 80-7 I guess if it Makes you feel good ok

People do it as survivor so they can face rank 15 killers who don’t understand chases, loops and kind games. That’s how they get those 4 gen chases

It used to be that after a rank reset high rank killer queues were very long, reaching at times 30 minutes. During this time I would let survivors escape to prevent ranking up so I could get more games.

Within the last few months high rank killer queues have been very good. So I stay at red ranks.

Simply, I want to be in red ranks as long as I'm not playing lobby sim most of the time.

For you, not necessarily for them. If you’re a killer going against lower survivors you’ll probably down them almost instantly. Maybe you let them go at the end but they still don’t get to “do much,” for that game. They feel absolutely helpless and dominated, knowing that the killer had to let them win.

If you’re a survivor going against a lower killer he will struggle to catch you, or at lest he should. If he finds you first 2-3 gens may be done during the first chase and unless the rest of the team is “being chill,” too he’s going to end up with barely an hooks.

Do it if you want a more fun game, but realize a more fun game for you probably comes at the expense of the other side.

Matchmaking is screwed right now. Last night as a rank 10 killer, I went up against nothing but red ranked survivors with thousands of hours in the game. I did OK, but hardly dominated. For someone else, they might intentionally smurf to try and get players of their own skill level.

I wouldn't smurf, because In my opinion, I play well above my rank, I just don't play enough to quickly level.up, nor do I play my best killers all the time, so I occasionally depip.
