Basically, Dead by Daylight's in the 2nd tier of Steam's best-selling games in 2019.

But the population doesn't seem to have grown.
People buy and play the game, but the game itself seems to have difficulty retaining players.
I can only assume this by how the steam charts are relatively static when it comes to the average player statistic.

Not quite sure why, but I thought I saw Torchlight 2 in there and was like "I know it was better received then Diablo at release, but still?"

This is because this game is too grindy for new players.
I still don't have enough shards to buy all killers (the remains are hag, oni and clown), even i have 400 hours in game, let alone survivors.
More than half of the characters and perks are locked at the beginning, and you either pay or grind to hell, which is not appealing to new players.
Also, the items in in-game stores is bloody expensive. And again, you either pay or grind to hell just to get different looks, which is not appealing to new players too
And the last is matchmaking. I dropped the game multiple times because i constantly go against green rank survivors when i'm brown rank as killer.
Ps: probably you have guessed it, i play mainly killer :)

It's the only logical conclusion, the game is just to unbalanced and to grindy. Who wants to deal with that as a beginner? Especially when they come from a quite balanced pvp game.

I have dropped and picked up this game a lot. I'm at around.. 200 hours? And I just got the last few killers I was missing cause big discounts on DLC. Cant image grinding out the rest or being a new survivor or killer coming into this. Least without a friends help or a guide on how to start.
