The First Rift Has Closed - How Did You Find It? (Community Survey)
If the post is too long, skip down to the bottom for the survey link!
Now that the first Rift is officially over, I think it's a good time to start asking how it went for everybody.
Did it achieve its goal of being completable by the average player? How accurate was the 70-80 hour completion target? How many people bought the Rift Pass, and why? How did the completion of Tome challenges factor into all this?
With those questions in mind, and more, I have designed a survey to collect some actual numerical data so we can see what the general community experience of the Rift really was. My goal is to get as many responses as possible, so that we can most accurately determine things like the average number of hours it took to complete, and what proportion of players were able to do so.
The aim is to generate a pool of data which is accessible to the DBD community, so that all of us have something tangible we can draw on when giving feedback and drawing conclusions about the Rift and the overall player experience.
I will leave the survey open for a week, after which I will be collecting the responses and sharing the data here on the forum. I do have plans to share the results with the developers if there are enough responses to generate meaningful data, since I imagine it could be helpful information for them to have for the sake of improving player experience in future Rifts, however the survey itself is not officially created or endorsed by BHVR.
The survey is multiple choice and completely anonymous, and should take you less than 5 minutes to complete. I would really appreciate it if anyone who is willing would take a few minutes to contribute by answering some questions about their experience with the Rift. The more responses we get, the more accurate the data will ultimately be.
Thank you very much in advance to all respondents! 😊
If you have any questions, comments or feedback, please feel free to leave them below and I'll respond as best I can.
Here is the survey link: https://www.survle.com/s/5df8d4afc2e6c
EDIT: Some respondents seem to be misreading the questions, particularly the question about how many tiers the player had already unlocked when the Rift began. Please read the questions carefully before answering! If you think you may have made a mistake in one of your answers, feel free to go back and retake the survey. Your second response will overwrite the first.

It is! I've been working on it for a while, so I'm very excited to see how people respond 😊

Good stuff, I just wish I could be more accurate with my hours. No way to tell on ps4 :(
2 -
Done :)
1 -
That's okay, thank you for your response! I assumed that most people wouldn't have kept track of exactly how much they played, but I figured that even a rough estimate was better than no information at all.
2 -
Same. I had no idea and had to guess.

Same

Done.
Have to add I thought giving mostly charms was kinda cheap of them and that's what made me question if I wanted it in the first place since they're kinda useless. I'm glad I'm seeing more skins this rift.
5 -
This is going to be interesting lol
3 -
Fair enough. Doesn't help that there were like six of the same charm in there 😋 I personally was happy with what I got from the last Rift, but I definitely agree that the next one is looking like a significant step up. Even the charms are better, in my opinion.
3 -
Lol, I hope so! I'm pretty excited to see how the numbers pan out.

Only reason I bought the pass was for the jake cosmetic
1 -
There is one question which is a bit wierd imo. I mean the one which goes something like this - Do you regret buying the Rift pass? - I dont regret that I bought it. It was my decision and I wanted to try everything and to see some charms. But on the other hand I dont think it was good enough and I wouldnt buy it again. These are two seperate things for me. I specified it like that in the descryption. So I chose that I dont regret it. Otherwise nice survey ;)
2 -
Thanks! I hope we get some solid data out of it 🤞 (or at least, as solid as anecdotal data can be)

Thank you for the compliment, and for taking the time to respond! And that's a valid perspective. I thought about adding a separate "Would you buy the Rift Pass again?" question, but ultimately I wanted to keep the focus of the questions on the first Rift, rather than future ones. If enough people feel like that would be a good question to ask, though, I can always add it in!

I don't know how long I played exactly, I'm a PS4 player, but I can assume it was at least 200 hours. I've played almost every day since the Archives came out and spent most if not all of my free time on it when I did play. I'm happy with the cosmetics I got and don't really regret buying the Rift Pass, but man am I burnt out on DBD after that grind. They definitely did not make this something the average player could complete with 1-2 hours a day playtime.
5 -
I suspect you're right, that's why I'm doing the survey to find out for sure.
And yeah, I know the feeling! I've barely touched DBD since I finished the Rift, and I don't think I'll pick it back up again until the next one starts.
2 -
Hopefully people focus on the rift/rewards/grind and not on current feelings towards the game from the ptb.
Are you planning to release any numbers? Percentage completed the rift/bought the pass/tier they got to/ hours played?
0 -
I played about 3 hours a day everyday. I stopped playing for a week. I did every challenge but the last 3 for killer.
0 -
Hopefully. I kept the questions multiple choice and fairly objective partially for that reason, although the questions related to satisfaction could get skewed that way. It shouldn't be too big of a deal, though, since the data I'm mostly interested in is plain numerical stuff, like whether people completed the Rift, how many hours it took them and how they did it. Most of the questions are there to address variables which could influence those main data points.
And yep, that's the plan. After the survey closes in a week, I'm going to look through and organise all the data, then I'll figure out the best way to present it such that it conveys as much straight information as possible without being incredibly overwhelming. Data like how many people completed the Rift, how many bought the pass, how many hours people put in and how far through the Rift that took them are all things I'm planning to include.
0 -
Did you manage to complete the Rift in the end?
0 -
A bit of an update for anyone who's interested: There have been 142 responses so far in the last two hours. Thank you so much to everyone who has already completed the survey! More responses means more accurate and reliable data for everyone 😊
2 -
Filled in the survey ^-^
As for how i found it. Seeing as i didn't buy the premium one i just got a bunch of free stuff so great!
The extra bloodpoints from the challenges was the biggest reward for me and those don't leave so i was overal happy with it
1 -
Hopefully they make it less of a grind. I work full time and do enjoy playing other games sometimes. And especially around the holidays, it wasn't really possible for me to get tier 70. I completed all the challenges by like tier 54. So those didn't really offer much help in advancing. Wish I didn't buy the pass. 😅
5 -
Yes i completed it around the 24-26 around there. With 3 master killer challenges left. I wouldn't have gotten it if i didn't play killer challenges in the other tomes.
1 -
it was good, I guess. I liked the Claudette charms and a few cosmetics and such but nothing else really stood out to me
1 -
If it's any consolation, you would have got the majority of your cells back by tier 54, and there wasn't a whole lot of value beyond that if you're too not interested in charms. So basically, you paid maybe 2-3 dollars for half a dozen different outfits, which is still pretty good!
2 -
In simple terms the rift was in no way possible for the average player to complete even doing all the challenges (which is already a lot for a casual player). So no, it did not achieve its goal of being suited for the average player.
1 -
"Average" is not the same as "casual", for the record, but regardless, whether or not the Rift was actually accessible to the average player is exactly what the survey is aiming to find out. The idea is that with something like this, we have data that actually represents the community experience, not just people's opinions as to what they think the community experience was.

I completed it, but my brother and me play the game so, we were two people. I think it was a bit grindy for casual players. Some average players stuggled it as well but I think most of the players I meet were able to complete or stay between 50-69, I think they should reduce a bit, the grind. I mean, I had enough free time to complete the challenges but the average player doesn't have that free time due to work or stuff.
3 -
Well I'm not sure, with recent changes BHVR seems to be focusing on yellow ranks so average is likely casual but I understand what you're saying.

The pass was too grindy, in my opinion. I play the game quite a lot, but I still found it to be too much unless I simply lived off the game like someone who streams it as their job. The price wasn't bad for the rewards given, but there's a bit too many charms that are just palette or texture swaps of the same design I'll never use. At that point I'd rather they just give me more bloodpoints or shards than reusing the same assets on something not many will utilize to begin with.
5 -
Completed the survey.
I didn't find the rift to be that bad and most of the challenges in the archives were easy.
1 -
Never completed it as I gave up doing challenges. I didn't find them fun or that they added anything to the gameplay.
I quit playing for a few days after each new tomb was released as the game for me was unplayable due to challenge farmers.
I worked out I would need around 400h+ of grind to complete the rift without challenges with queue times so I never bothered with it.
The charms I don't use. I wear a jacket on my main survivor so it covers them so its kinda pointless. In used them on my killers but they aren't worth it imo. Skins were nice but with the grind to get them without challenges I would never get a full set.
Overall I don't think the rift added anything to the game for myself. It's something that stopped me playing at times due to the frustration of not getting normal matches.

I put in about 300 hours of time. I did all but 3 challenges.

I stopped caring once I got enough vials to get Blight Jake. I will probably do the same once I get far enough to get Mascot Clown minus the weapon.

Good survey. I know it is likely too late, but I would have recommended adding some questions regarding the the feelings people had on the grindiness, and how difficult they felt the challenges were. These seem to be what most people took issue with when it came to the Rift/Archives.
3 -
It was too late for me to get the pass or it wasn't worth it. I'll get the pass next time if the swag is worth getting.

Thanks for the feedback, and for completing the survey 😊
I could add such questions, and will if enough people think it's necessary, because I do want this to be a "by the community, for the community" kind of thing that benefits everyone. However, there were a couple of reasons why I didn't add too many opinion-based questions to begin with - firstly, I didn't want the survey to be or to feel too long, which is why I tried to keep it to multiple choice mainly.
Secondly, I was mainly interested in raw data related to how many people finished the Rift, how they did it, how long it took them, etc. Player satisfaction is important, but I feel like that's something you could a good grasp of get just by reading the forums. What I wanted to do was more to create a pool of solid, largely objective numerical data that the community as a whole could access.

Maybe should have added a question asking "Why did you buy tiers with auric cells", might seem redundant but some of the players that did this might have interesting reasons.

Hello mate,
Just finished filling out your survey, pretty interested in the results when they're back.
I progressed up until the trapper mask cosmetic then bought the rift as I really love that mask.
I bought 3 tiers at the end because they rounded me off nicely at the bear trap charm.
I loved the archives and the challenges as it gave me a non-sweaty reason to play DBD on my own, and I'm looking forward to completing the next set.
The rift is definitely a grind to get to the higher tiers, (I calculated with a few friends it takes 90 hours of play time if you do the challenges very efficiently, which is roughly one hour a day if you are willing to commit that). A friend and I both had a similar experience where we committed way too much time to DBD, purely out of excitement, and it ended up feeling like a chore and soured the game a little bit by the end, but that's just a lesson learnt.
Next rift I plan on not being so committed, which should be easy as trapper is my favourite killer and he is out of the way now. The only cosmetic which is a "must have" for me is the new hag one because it looks beautiful and I love the hag, so I'll purchase the rift again if I make it that far for free. I aim to not commit to finish it this time because it really got it the way of my life though.
Cheers.

It was alright, I wasn’t ready motivated grinding through it though because the rift cosmetics didn’t interest me too much.
1 -
I wish I had an idea of how many hours it took. I had to guess, and I think I low-balled it, which was probably the wrong way to go given how ungodly bad the grind was. Having to grind XP due to the fact that surprise, not everyone has all 70 days during which to play the game, was miserable and has led to rather severe burnout.
I would feel better about having completed the Rift if the vial charm looked better on hooks. It looks rather pathetic being nearly empty; it should be at least 3/4 full to look aesthetically pleasing.
4 -
I didn't want to make too many "free response" type questions, but you're right, that could be interesting to know. I added the question about buying tiers originally mainly because it's an important variable that might affect the data from other questions, such as how many hours it took people to complete the Rift.

They updated it. In the PTB it's nearly full
1 -
Holy hell, that's amazing. I am happy about that.
Yeah, I was just watching Monto playing and immediately noticed it, and I was like, "Wait, I don't think mine looked like that when I played earlier..." A silent buff to the charm on the PTB lol.
1 -
Meh. Didn't care enough to bother trying to complete it.
1 -
Hi, thanks for taking the time to do the survey, and for sharing your perspective 😊 I also enjoyed the challenges on the whole, but I definitely get where you're coming from with the grind and the burnout. A lot of people seem to have had a similar experience.
And I agree, I love the new Hag skin! It's one of my favourite things on the new Rift. It's just a recolour, but a damn good one in my opinion.
1 -
Did it achieve its goal of being completable by the average player
I guess it depends on what they consider average. Based on the recent changes they are making, it seems that they consider new players the average.
Regardless, it seemed more geared toward long time players that already had all characters and perks unlocked. IIRC, it also required some DLC characters.
If they want to make it more accessible to more people they should have a way for everyone to complete it. They could still have certain bonus nodes with those types of requirments, for people that have those to get extra points without preventing progress for players that don't have every character and perk unlocked.
2 -
I think most people had to guess on that one. I wasn't expecting many people to have an accurate idea of how many hours it took them, but even rough guesses are still valuable information to have. The XP grind did get a bit tiresome, especially towards the end since the challenges didn't quite get most people all the way. I'm hoping that's something they'll be adjusting for the next Rift.
