White ward purpose

Isn't the purpose of the White Ward to keep you from losing an item? I took in a purple tool box with white ward perk so I wouldn't lose it if I died and the Killer did not did have Franklin's demise. Why did I lose my toolbox when I died?

No I've been playing the game for over a year now I know thise are the 2 ways to loose it even with the perk. Sorry should have added that

There is a bug that causes you to loose it sometimes. I would exit the gate with an item in hand but once I see the results screen, it says that I lost the item RIP.6
