As stated before by one of the devs rank is no longer being used for matchmaking. However they are working on or considering a rank reward system as ranks are not being removed from the game.3 -

The main thing is playing with friends for many. Also many find survivor less stressful! I like playing both roles myself but have definitely played survivor more due to friends.11
