What is the Entity and why should I care?

It just seems to me that too many people say "cause entity lol" whenever a flaw is highlighted in the lore, characters, or the insanity of this whole game. I feel like it's a cheap excuse for bad writing: A mystery box, something that can be kept vague and all-powerful at the same time to explain away everything or nothing. It justifies everything. At that point, why should I care about absolutely anything? not to mention, why does it have to be so darn edgy? most of the early dbd lore is so dark i feel like a depressed tween wrote it when they were having a bad day.

if everything is under the entity's control, who cares about the characters? the choices? the story going forward? it's all under the whim of "entity wants it this way" so it's like no character has a bit of agency, which means they're not characters. it's garbage.

am i wrong about this? looking at it the wrong way? let me know. i really think the entity and its motivations need to be fleshed out soon, I will LAUGH if the tome entry on the entity is just some pretentious guy talking about how inscrutable and unfathomable this spider entity is for 5 entries, which is tbh what i'm expecting lol.

You're not wrong. Honestly the Entity is also just the BVHR dev team. Example is The ranking system. A killer can tunnel a single survivor into the ground or facecamp them (the absolute least fun, but also the most effenciant way to play).

I don't tunnel/facecamp because when I was physically able to (damn you struggle mechanic!!) play survior I remembered how much it sucked to have that happen. Which is why I look away when an unhooked survivor runs infront of me and instead follow the trail of the healthy survivor.

But in game we say it's the entity not wanting us to behave that way.

I honestly think The Entity by itself can be terrifying if they kept her as an Unknown Entity.

I've always adored lovecraftian horror and how it creates this fear of the unknown. Which is why I adored the Payday 2 Secret ARG for bringing in things like Nephilims and Ancient Relics of unknown origin. (No seriously, they actually did that.)

But the problem with Dead by Daylight's lore and The Entity is that BHVR has given us a little bit too much detail on her.

For one, we know her gender. That's one mystery that stops being questioned immediately. She's a femalle.

Secondly, because we know she goes through a yearly blight, we can speculate that she is most likely a plant rather than some eldritch monster like Chthulu.

Third, we know she can only come to our world through acts of mass death and violence or by stepping into her forest.

Fourth, we know she doesn't have a complete grip on her realms. The Hatch, the Golden Toolboxes, even Auric Cells which are the building blocks of her realms can be used to manipulate objects inside the realms or the realms itself. So that makes her less of a fearful deity.

I think the Entity is an interesting concept for a character, a multidimensional being (or plant as speculated) that can transport survivors and killers into a neverending game of life and death. She doesn't do this for her sadistic desires, but to survive as she feeds off of the Survivor's hope.

She sends killers to put the survivors under immense stress and pressure as well as give them a fighting chance to escape and survive. Continually feeding off of their hope for escape, their hope to escape her realm and this nightmare.

She could've been scary. But the fact that we know even bits about her shows that she isn't an Unknown, she doesn't make us fear her for not knowing what she is.

    I feel like half of this post was just me rambling about stuff so excuse me if it doesn't make sense ^^;

She's a plant? I thought she was a spider because of, you know, the spider legs that grow around hooks.

Thank you for your post though I didn't know so much of that, that's a very comprehensive write-up for a complete stranger, thank you! fear of the unknown is so powerful, i agree, and the way you wrote about her completely changed the way i think about her: with things like auric cells (which i would have written off as an excuse for currency) existing in-game from a lore perspective, it really changes things.

Does she only feed off of hope though? or is it any kind of emotion? i heard the orange juice on blight cosmetics is essentially "mulched" past survivors/killers who were literally mulched and turned into pure emotion juice. sounds crazy but if so, is that only hope or is it any emotion like "fear"? seems to me like the trials are set up to encourage fear at least

Are you aware of the Lovecraftian mythos? That's the Entity.

A god beyond our understanding or comprehension that aims to get stronger so it can devour the Earth.

no, i'm not, sorry i can't relate to that much beyond knowing it's about space tentacles or something. i also have no idea how "A god beyond our understanding or comprehension that aims to get stronger so it can devour the Earth." is relevant to discussing Rin's personal motivations or narrative arc, that was kind of weird to randomly blurt out

What is your title in this thread again?

For someone who's interested in plots and stories you have an unnatural inability to read.

If you refer to the devs calling the Entity "she" it's because in french nouns are either males or females, there aren't neutral ones like in english.

Also, I doubt a multidimentional being can be classified as animal, plat or whatever.

Pretty sure it was hashed out from her responses to light and details about her makeup that Entity-chan is a sapient fungus with heavily arthropod-influenced characteristics.
