From today's downtime and other BHVR news
Hello,
thought about this before, but with the server downtime today and news of Deathgarden's demise, it's got me wondering. If the worst SHOULD happen to DBD and there was a decision made to pull the plug on dedicated servers, would it be as simple to switch back to the old manner of playing with killer hosting, or would the game end?

Game right now is broken even on console, and we don’t have dedicated servers, so I doubt it would matter.

The game would end. Servers were needed even before the dedicated ones, for matchmaking, login, anti-cheat, store, etc. They have all the control.

Mechanically, it would be as easy as disabling the servers again, the way they have done over the past few months while running tests. How much of a financial toll it would take on the company, however, is something no one here will be able to tell you for sure.
That said, I don't think they would have invested more than they could afford in the dedicated servers, and DBD remains pretty successful, so I don't think we need to worry about the game going under any time soon.

Exactly. I was from the very beginning (the announcement) of dedicated servers pessimistic because, you know we all know the technical quirks of this game and that they never, EVER can implement dedicated servers in a timely manner in a sense that they just work. They also have to do the Switch version and soon the mobile version, of course the servers were doomed. Normally, you have a team the size of whole BHVR studio only working on servers (EA, Activision, etc.).
Totally understandable the current servers are a big letdown :(

It's actually not true that the game would go under if dedicated servers were removed. The dedicated servers and the data servers are different things. If the data servers went down permanently, then that might be a problem for the survival of the game, but if the plug were to be pulled on the dedicated servers it would be very easy to go back to peer-to-peer connections just by disabling the dedicated servers again.

Steal dem deathgarden servers
It's the only way...
I wanted to play deathgarden if it ever came to Consoles. I wonder how many will just join the dbd Dec team to make it better.

In the sense that all servers are specifically for this game, yes, all servers are dedicated. But there's a difference between the servers on which they store our player data, which have been in operation since the game began (and those are the ones to which we "connect" when the game opens, by the way), and the servers which are currently being tested for hosting games, which are what is commonly referred to as the "dedicated servers".
The latter kind are able to be switched on and off quite easily, as they have been several times already for testing purposes, and while they are switched off, the game goes back to killer-hosted peer-to-peer matches by default, and the data severs remain active.

OK, so if BHVR decided to pull the plug, as they have for Deathgarden, would it be THE END for DBD, or would it be able to continue on?

Playing could go back to peer-to-peer, but matchmaking and player data would have to be hosted by someone else. Handing off player data to someone else for them to host it can be difficult because of data protection laws.
There is also the matter of the licensed characters for which the licensing deals would have to be re-negotiated if Behaviour goes under or decides to drop Dbd completely.

Apparently the staff have been moved to other projects within BHVR.
Although, it's probably best to make a new topic to ask such questions, as they're not really related to the main topic of this thread.
