barely getting 2 safe unhooks on average, meaning the first survivor node is going to take me over 50 games if I'm lucky, assuming it isn't a basement trapper like I've gotten in most of my games.

That's actually what makes them so bad. It encourages hook farming on top of being just such a GRIND. 25 saves, really? And that's the first challenge and then it leads directly into an EGC 2 save that must be done in one game.
It's not "challenging" to BT farm. It's annoying and takes time.

Well, this is not really a fair argument, you can stand by anything at this point, there will always be someone, somewhere, that likes a certain thing, no matter how depraved that is.

Sure, but in this case, it's not just a couple of people, it's a sigificant chunk of the community. And the reason those people enjoy the challenges is not, for the most part, because they like making other people's lives miserable.

I would make the argument that a significant chunk of the community likes to make the killer DC, tbags and/or is toxic in other ways.
In any case, remember that one of the reasons why the new Halloween event wasn’t a simple copy of the past one was because of all the commotion due to people suiciding on hook as soon as they got their vial - and notice that I did like the event, but if they want to facilitate a certain way of playing the game they should know that these challenges are very quickly going in the opposite direction.
