Spoilers for this who haven't finished the Master Challenges in Tome 3.

In the cutscene, we see Evan's father in the mines, beating up one of the workers, maybe one of Evan's friends who sold him out before the mine collapsed, with Evan being witness to this, as recognized by his green suspenders. We see a shadow walking away from a bed, presumably Archie MacMillan, Evan's father. Evan then wakes up in his bed with a bandaged hand before looking at a picture of him and his father. You can see a framed picture above Evan's bed, the picture of his dying mother that his father hung up.

In the Trapper's character info it says

"When Archie MacMillan finally snapped, Evan became his enforcer in what would become known as the worst mass murder in modern history."

This is presumably what happens in Memory 1244, the final memory. Instead of beating Evan like usual, his father simply walks away. Evan follows him, apologizing, getting no response. It says

"Don't pretend. I know. A few of you maggot friends sold you out for a few dollars. Evan starts but doesn't say anything. Can't say anything. The words are caught in his throat. He apologizes. His father says nothing. Walks away. Evan follows him to his bedroom where he sees... the picture of his dying mother... framed above the bed. His father tells Evan he will learn a lesson tomorrow. One he hopes he understands. Evan stares at his father and feels... hate... hate for the maggots who betrayed him and for his father... respect... no... not respect... admiration..."

It could be possible that seeing Evan's drawings made Archie snap. Archie is seen in the mines, around a few heavily beaten bodies. It could be possible Archie wanted Evan to see this to teach him a lesson.

But from then on we don't know what happens. All we know is that Evan presumably becomes more and more like his father, ruling the workers with an iron fist. It could be possible that the cave in was solely Archie's doing, and as his father became sicker and weaker Evan stepped up to rule the workers just as his father did. We know that Evan looks up to his father more and more throughout his memories, eventually idolizing him, which possibly lead Evan to step up to take his father's place. We still don't know how Archie died, only that he was found starved and abandoned in an old warehouse.
