STAKE OUT: A Survivor Perk Suggestion for Beginners
I've been playing about six weeks. It seems that not many players use STAKE OUT. This perk might not be that valuable to experienced players who are better at hitting great skill checks, but for beginners, it can be very impactful.
STAKE OUT lets you collect up to 4 tokens by remaining inside the terror radius of the killer while not being chased. That's actually very easy to do unless you're up against a stealth killer, but even then, it's possible to collect tokens throughout a trial. The tokens count good skill checks as great skill checks. The value of that is obvious, but there are less obvious benefits for beginners.
First, it gives you a way to be useful early in trials against killers using Hex: Ruin. Like many beginners, I was reluctant to work on gens at all until someone happened to find the hexed totem and cleanse it, but that sometimes never happens, and often, by the time the hexed totem is cleansed, the killer is already on the way to a 4K conclusion. If you have a toolbox and 4 tokens on STAKE OUT, you can get through a gen all by yourself while Hex: Ruin is active.
More importantly, it teaches you to be aware of the killer's location and actions. Instead of being totally passive in relation to the killer and just hoping s/he doesn't come your way, you can actively seek out the killer and stealthily stay within the terror radius to observe his/her strategy while gaining tokens. This builds up your evasion skills a lot faster than just reacting when you hear the killer approach you. It also gives you insight into how killers behave. Since you're watching the killer, you'll probably be in a position to get safe unhooks early in matches, which gives you another way to be helpful to your team. (On this last point, I think STAKE OUT pairs very well with DELIVERANCE, one of Adam's teachable perks. If you're in the position to get safe unhooks early in matches, then you'll do your a team a HUGE favor later when you can get yourself unhooked.)
Beginners struggle with confidence. STAKE OUT gets you actively involved in the match, takes you out of a merely reactive mindset, and in that way, it builds your confidence over time.
