Matchmaking issues. Are they truly broken?

As a new player I'd like to see what the more experienced gamers think. I notice a TON of complaints about matchmaking being 'off'. Is there an actual problem with the game or, is this the best match possible AT THAT MOMENT? If it's a time with not many players waiting in a lobby, then there is more of a chance of seeing a 14 vs. 2 for example.

Thoughts?

Matchmaking is off because everyone's getting into red ranks, so you aren't matched with people of your skill level very often. It's also bad because the game makes you sit in queue for at least 3 minutes as a red rank survivor everytime

I've questioned this myself honestly, since I see more SWF's lately bringing in their low rank friends. Also the fact that Survivors are just Red ranking within a few matches because of the simplicity of it. I swear the only low ranks left these days are the newbies that join their already maxed friends. But, that's just my opinion on it.
