Can only 4 survivors be at the campfire at a time?

Yep. The devs mentioned that there are multiple campfires which hold 4 survivors each. They're essentially "pocket" dimensions within The Entity's realm. So each campfire has 4 people, and after each trial, survivors are randomly sent to another campfire. That's my guess.
