Secrets In DbD
Just curious if the Devs have ever been known to throw in some secrets into the game. I might be spoiled from other dev teams who also have games that introduce new content on a regular basis and will add things for the community to find and discuss about. Maybe that’s been happening and I don’t know about it.
I don’t really like asking friends to get on DbD just to play Custom, so I can truly look around and explore map details, and every time I think about doing so, I’ll just try to load up Custom only to realize they won’t let me start a game solo. Also, don’t really mess around in game, I’m do busy surviving or killing.
You guys know what I mean by secrets right? Like when they added Freddy and the pre-school. I’ve ran into the school several times but never really looked at the chalk boards (if it had any) and never might have seen something written on it. Like maybe it looked like a teacher wrote their name on the board and that name was Robert England. A reference to the original actor. Things like that, either in game lore references or real world lore references to movie franchises. If that’s not something being done then I feel it’s a bit of a waste. Maps seem to be getting more and more detailed and fun and I’d like to see some more secrets thrown in~

Those are really fun. There's a YouTube called Paulie Esther that I like and he has a thing where apparently there's a golden toolbox hidden in every level and they try to find it.
I wouldn't be surprised if one day they made a level with a lot of decaying portraits but in reality its just the dev team and not random people.

On Hawkins, there's a secret room if the basements by the stairs. If you're playing nurse, go to the glass room basement location and blink in there. There is a dead scientist with a whiteboard with the chemical formula for gold surrounded by empty beer bottles.
Interesting to note is that the golden toolbox on hawkins has not been found yet.
I really like the one where the Legion mural is on Ormond. It's a nice nod to Jeff's first commission (his first logo design was for the Legion).

No worries, I love things like that, like how Onis mask is on Yamaoka estate... and was a hint he was coming...

Wrong, the golden toolbox was found. It is only visible during EGC. But for everyone in different locations afaik. I saw it once in the portal room where a box opened. But not all my mates saw it there.
I wonder much more where the golden toolbox in the reworked Lery's is.

The maps are full of stuff like that, pretty much anything that has something written or drawn on it has some kind of meaning behind it. The golden toolboxes and the secret room on Hawkins are the most famous examples, but they put a lot of small, significant things into the maps that tend to go unnoticed by players.
There are also fun details and changes that get made behind the scenes, like how the Family Residence map, when it first came out with the Spirit's release, had one sword missing from the set of three katanas hanging on the wall, which was meant to be the sword that she uses ingame. After the Oni was released, a second sword vanished from the set.

more of an easter egg, the cows on coldwind farms will actually swing if hit by something. try it out with huntress.
another thing would be these statues on yamoaka estate, that actually track you when you aren't looking at them, only to stop once you do

I was unaware that it was found.

Paulie did a whole video about it, the Secret Room factored heavily into it and was a key clue in the toolbox's discovery.

It was a really hidden one to be fair, I suggest you watch it or try and find it yourself!
Also apparently there is an Easter egg in the Yamoaka Estate that's yet to be found which isn't the turning heads.
