The rift and the tome don't have that much to do with each other, neither does that challenge and getting morid. If you want to get that challenge done without moris or Franklin's, use Plunderer's Instinct.

To add on to what indieeden7 says, that particular challenge is optional, both from the perspective of you can go a different route to get to the final node or, if you really, REALLY hate the challenges, you have the option of playing killer/just playing normally and using base player exp. the challenge is supposed to be hard, but it's not some freaky unintuitive challenge. Its use the key in the way they're intended to use.
