Spine Chill Deserves a Buff
So the latest patch has been a hot topic on the forums lately, but oddly enough no one mentioned the Spine Chill nerf the devs tried to slip past us! Perhaps the devs tapped it because more players were realizing its potential, but whatever the reason a nerf was definitely unjustified. I bet you're wondering right now how exactly the devs nerfed Spine Chill. Let me tell you.
Spine Chill nerf in latest patch: Great skill check bonus reduced to 1% from 2%
"How is this a nerf?" you might ask? Well, Spine Chill offers a 10% skill check chance increase while active, and by nerfing skill checks they should have adjusted this perk to compensate, like they did with Stake Out.
My Solution Idea: Spine Chill will now offer a 20% skill check chance increase, not only does this compensate for the skill check change in terms of gen speed effectiveness(2*.1=1*.2), but it makes Spine Chill a good farming perk for skill check points and a good Autodidact synergy perk. Let me know your guys' thoughts! Did Spine Chill deserve the nerf? Is this the best way to buff the perk? Thanks for reading.

It shouldn't be buffed. As a spine chill maniac, I know that this isn't the reason to bring spine chill. You bring spine chill so when the killer is looking at your direction, spine chill activates and says: "get the FK out of there!". Also, why double it? Either way the skillcheck nerf didn't hit spine chill that hard, since it remains an S++++++++ tier perk.
Edit: being instead of bring, thanks a lot autocorrect :^)

You sound a little biased. What I mainly aim for with this change is consistency between skill check focused perks. Buffing Stake Out but not Spine Chill seems like a missed opportunity. Besides, why would you be against an Autodidact buff?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say 99% of people do not use Spine Chill in the red ranks for the skill check. They use it because it nullifies any possibility of being snuck up on by stealth Killers and it's honestly the best counter to Spirit. Stake out makes sense because it's solely based on getting great skill checks. It's also an actual teachable perk from a character unlike Spine Chill which is universal.

If this goes live, the healing speed will also be affected which is a bit too much. Just because spine chill relates slightly to skillchecks, it doesn't mean it should be buffed. Let me demonstrate:
The reason you want the buff is because it's skillcheck relatable right? (With gens). Let's go what spine chill does:
- Gives you information
- Raises skillcheck chances
- You repair faster
- You heal faster
- You vault faster
- Sabotage faster
- Search chests faster
- Cleanse bones faster
- Open gates faster
Now imagine all of these will a 20% skillcheck chance and congrats you made the next op meta perk :)
See what I mean?

Hmm fair enough that it doesn't need a buff...but did it need the nerf?
0 -
Yeah, basically. It's probably one of the best, if not the best, perks in the game for solo Q players. Otherwise you just get merc'd by stealth killers on indoor maps or when working on generators with lots of LOS blockers nearby.
The added vault speed to help counter-act dedicated window hits is just a bonus to me.
Sometimes it's a heartbeat killer on an open map and it's not really needed. Other times you hit ghostface on Lery's and it's the only thing stopping you from getting murdered.

I disagree. I don't think it needs a buff. Forgive me if I am wrong, but it seems like you want a buff to Auto-Didact, maybe having it make skill checks appear more often, but they are more difficult?
I think it might need a little nerf to how far away you can detect a Killer, but other than that I think it is a super healthy perk.

It was a minor indirect Nerf. Whether or not it was intentional, I can't say. No matter what happens, you still get notified when a Killer looks in your direction and you get a speed boost in whatever activity you are doing by 6% as they look. It wasn't even based on great skill checks, it was based on triggering skill checks while shortening the success zone. You hitting great skill checks constantly was just an indirect buff at the time.

I don’t think it’s a nerf. I stopped using it but when I did, my main benefit was knowing the killer is coming my way. I would then Urban my way somewhere. I also didn’t think of what Desh said. It’s not a teachable perk. I don’t too much about a bunch of these perks but I’m learning them, so don’t mind me if I’m missing ideas of how the perk work.

Spine Chill is the best perk in the game. Problem is many people use it in the worst way.

Fair points, I agree that it is plausible the devs didn't intend for the skill check chance to be a buff. Thanks for discussing!

I would also change the name of this forum to deserve instead of needs :^)
2 -
Yea you're right. It'd definitely be better to buff Autodidact directly instead of buffing Spine Chill which is already a controversial perk it seems.

Autodidact should give skillchecks every 4 seconds. Then it might actually work. If it's still underwhelming, make it 3.5 seconds.

Good thinking

I pointed out that this would not make Spine Chill stronger than it was before, 20% chance times 1% bonus = an average of .2% bonus
10% chance times 2% bonus = an average of .2% bonus

Yes, Spine Chill is just bordering on being too strong, in my opinion. It is universally good, there is no situation in which equipping Spine Chill will harm you. No way to screw it up. That being said, the effect isn't like OoO, that's what keeps it balanced imo.

Could work. Wouldn't be opposed.

Distortion needs a buff not spine chill 😂

Spine Chills is one of the best perks in the game. As it stands, it needs no buff. Other perks do.

While i use this perk everytime, iam totally against a buff.
I would also say it should be nerfed because it is really unfair agains stealth killers.

Considering how limited the skill check part of spinechill is who really cares? Vault speed and info, thats spinechill.

Spine chill tells when a killer is coming and severely hinders a stealth killer
0 -
So Spine chill allows you to slip out before the killer shows up so you can either stealth away or get a head start running.
Increase the skillcheck odds and now every time I run away a huge explosion (thanks RNG) tells them exactly where I'm at....I really don't know a single person that uses Spine chill for the 10% Skillcheck (only when killer is looking in your direction)...
0 -
No. Spine Chill is absolutely fine as is.
0 -
nah spinechill is amazing as it is, i always love running that perk. it increases every single action each time the killer looks your way, it also counters all stealth killers as it is. the amount of gens, heals or gates i have finished because of spinechill is insane and honestly if it got buffed it`d be a little OP and then become meta meaning stealth killers are unplayable

I mean yes, you would get a lot of the tokens in the first heal, but it's hard enough to find just ONE person who'll heal anyways. I think autodidact could be one of the best tbh.

Serious question: Is 1% instead of 2% really that big a difference? On paper it seems pretty negligible, and a small price to pay for getting more points when you hit one, which seems more valuable to me, personally.
