Imagine shutting up!

Where did this whole "imagine" thing come from? Everyone keeps saying it here recently. I see it so often that I keep thinking of that line from Archer of Malory saying "Imagine shutting up!". Is it the new 'literally' these days, where everyone keeps saying it?
