I think you're confusing "didn't want to be hooked" with "didn't want to let you hook them"
The former implies that they would enjoy sitting on the floor dying, which they clearly didn't. The latter implies they don't want to give up on the match and so, want to get off of your shoulder in order to continue.
Ironically, the situation that would most likely have led to one of them getting the hatch would be if you were to put one of them on the hook. You probably wouldn't have gotten the one you picked up first onto the hook, leading to another chase, resulting in you (presumably, unless you would like five more chases by going pick up the other guy after downing the first one) hooking the guy and him killing himself, ultimately leaving the hatch to his pal who you are probably too far to get, depending on who you are playing.
