Implementation of cross save

I know the devs mentioned cross save during the 4th anniversary stream when they talked about cross play, but I don't think they said anything about the implementation of cross save or if it will be released along side cross play. Will we be able to merge multiple accounts' progress on different platform, or will we need to choose a single profile?
