What brought up the springtrap arguement?
I think it could be quite cool if done properly, so no hate. I'm just wondering, why the huge spike in his popularity? ######### happened while I was gone?

Here's how I remember it:
After the Silent Hill DLC came out, people started speculating about other video game characters that could be added (and of course, FNaF was a contender). I made a long detailed thread about why a FNaF chapter wouldn't be a bad idea, and (not to brag) it sort of popped off. Then the stars aligned or something, and there was some fan-made chase music that went viral, as well as a petition for a FNaF chapter that got like 7,000 signatures. There's probably some stuff that I left out, but that's sorta how I remember it.

I believe the story is something similar to how @NightmareReborn put it. Although to be fair I do want to add it's not like this request popped up suddenly overnight recently, fnaf has been a suggestion to put into the game for a really long time now but people for the most part dismissed it up until recently where I would agree, a spike in popularity and interest surged after Silent Hill made it into Dead By Daylight.
In all fairness to Five Night's At Freddy's, it is a culturally relevant horror franchise at the moment especially in gaming circles around the globe. Springtrap himself was the unanimous choice for what best fits the Dead By Daylight thematic because of his worn, dilapidated, decrepit aesthetic, and he has a certain level of significance in the Fnaf story arch as well.
Although how well Fnaf itself actually meshes and fits with Dead By Daylight is still a topic that is well up for debate. "Fits best" doesn't actually mean "fits well" it just means it's the "best" option not that it's an actual good option. Which many people still stand firmly in their opinion that it's not a good option, of course there is a significant movement of opposition to stand up against those people and say he is indeed a good option.
In all reality, if he does come, I don't think it'll be for awhile. My money is still on the next chapter being a huge and popular movie licensed character like Candyman, Pennywise, or Pinhead. At this point however, it's all speculation and nobody knows a thing.
