As a new player I'd say Claudette since she gives information with Empathy and you can heal yourself with Self Care. Next would be Meg or David. David has a good point farming perk with We're Going To Live Forever and the best exhaustion perk Dead Hard. Meg just as 3 very good starting perks.

Personally I’d say Jake should be the first because of him having Iron Will which is one of the best survivor perks in the game. I’d then say Dwight to get Bond, which again is a great perk as it provides you with a lot of information. If you’re like me and like cleansing totems, Tapp should be your next guy. As Detectives Hunch is a severely underrated perk and it’s one of the best in the game. Nancy has Inner Strength which is arguably the best self-healing perk in the game and it also pairs up well with Detectives Hunch. Maybe look into Laurie and Bill for DS and Unbreakable / Borrowed Time.

A lot of it comes down to the type of player you want to be. But regardless of that, Iron Will is often found in every match and for good reason. It’s honestly God tier.

These survivors and in this order. (Try and get sprint burst or another endurance perk from the Shrine of Secrets).

Meg and Laurie (if you have Laurie)

You'll gain access to Sprint Burst, Adrenaline, and Decisive Strike. These perks all 3 are in almost any meta build. After that, you might wanna go for Bill to get Unbreakable (probably the single most game changing perk in the game) and Borrowed Time.

Definitely Dwight for Bond. That perk will save lives including your own.

Depends on how you want to play, for me personally I'd recommend Feng, Jake, Claudette, and Meg first. Lithe is my go to exhaustion perk and Alert is great for information, Iron Will is one of the best Survivor perks it's great for escaping chases and avoiding detection when injured, Self Care comes in handy or Botany Knowledge when playing altruistic and Empathy is great for info and altruism, and Meg has Adrenaline which is great but a little situational and quick and quiet which is very useful.

    Honorable mentions:

    Iron will (Jake)

Decisive strike (Laurie - though I wouldn't advice this at first if you are new to the game as its better to grasp the basics than to rely on this perk)

Spine Chill (bloodweb perk available to everyone)

Dead Hard/We are gonna Live forever (David)

Meg, Bill, David and Laurie ( if you want to spend auric cells on her ).

Dwight for teamwork perks, such as Bond or Prove Thyself

    Meg for Sprint Burst

Claudette for stealthy plays and all the healing perks.

A lot of people on here will also tell you "Self-Care bad", but I don't really see it. It's a bit of a comfort pick for me as a solo player, but hey. I also like having two health states. David is also a good one for We're Gonna Live Forever or Dead Hard if you're on console, and Feng's exhaustion perk Lithe is by far my favourite of the bunch.

When I first started playing Dwight was my best starter with bond. With aura reading perks I could see live in game how survivors were acting and doing. It helped me learn what to do, the maps, and gen locations.

After restarting on PC, I went immediately to David for double bloodpoints (WGLF) and Dead Hard.

For me on PC: David, Bill, Laurie, Claudette, Meg, Jake, Nea, Feng Min

and I recommend this order to all as well.

Any of the survivors who were in the game at launch (Dwight, Meg, Claudette, Jake) are great starting characters. Feng Min and Nea are pretty nice too (well-varied personal perk sets). Kate is also a reasonable choice due to Windows of Opportunity (which can help newer players learn basic maze tiles faster and last longer in chase). Besides maybe Kate, the other six survivors here all provide at least one pretty good teachable for new players to work towards as well.

I won't deny that David and especially Laurie offer some strong perks to work with, but I don't think either of them starts with a particularly easy-to-use build for the newcomer nor are they really great for learning how basic survivor gameplay works. You don't learn how to play the role better through Dead Hard, DS, or Object of Obsession; you instead learn how to use these perks in effective ways after you've developed your own abilities as a survivor.

I'd suggest doing them in this order assuming you don't yet have any of the DLC.

    David.

WGLF and Dead Hard are solid options and WGLF aids in the grind. Combined with Borrowed Time from Bill you'll get at least 50% more BP every match if you put any effort in so he should be first. DO NOT USE NO MITHER.

    Bill.

Unbreakable and Borrowed Time are super meta. DO NOT USE LEFT BEHIND.

    Meg.

Sprint Burst is strong, QNQ is okay and Adrenaline is solid. If I had to pick one survivor who had all usable perks but nothing absolutely broken, I'd pick Meg.

Free survivors to avoid leveling first in no particular order.

    Nea

While Balanced Landing can be good, most maps it just falls flat one. Streetwise is borderline useless. Urban Evasion is decent, but avoiding the killer doesn't really earn you any points and you should aim to get better at chases at the start of your dbd career over hiding.

    Jake

Sabo is trash. Calm Spirit is only good against Doctor and Infectious Fright users. Iron Will is amazing, but I don't feel like it's worth it until you get deeper into the game and grow more experienced. I'd say that aiming for Iron Will first out of all the 'bad' survivors is your best bet.

    Claudette

Empathy is her only good perk in my opinion. Self Care wastes so much time, but has its uses. I think Self Care is similar to Urban Evasion in that it promotes a playstyle you should avoid playing as a new player. Botany Knowledge is just lackluster. WMI isn't up all the time but works waaaayyyy better. I think aside from Jake's Iron Will, Claud should be the first of the 'bad' survivors you level. Her perks are all at least usable.

    Dwight

Leader is bad. Prove Thyself is okay if you want to group up and crank out gens, but just isn't worth the slot while you're new. Bond is good, but isn't worth spending all your points to get it. He's similar to Claudette in that the one perk he has that's good isn't worth the investment.

Brand new then i would say Claudette for self care and the min for lithe. use kindred and spine chill with those two in the beginning to help with killer notification coming your way, healing and winning chase. Next go with Bill for borrowed time and unbreakable....just to start with :D Good Luck! What did you go with?

Claud then david. Self care is your friend since youre new, dead hards a good perk, wglf is great for getting extra bps. Then do meg, great perks in particular adrenaline

Meg then Laurie and David, Claudette is a bad choice since it'll make you rely on self care which is a really bad perk.

Id suggest Feng since all of her perks are pretty useful for a newbie. None of its really top tier or anything, but its all still pretty handy.

    Effectiveness wise:

Bill (BT, Unbreakable), David (Dead Hard) and Claudette (Self-Care, Empathy)

Lots of people are throwing out Meg, but her perks are hard to use effectively when you're a new player. I think Claudette's a much better choice for someone who's brand new. Heal yourself, heal others, plus that Claudette stealth.

Feng Min would be a decent choice, although she's DLC at least on some platforms. Technician's great for beginners, Lithe is a really solid and straightforward perk to help in the chase, and Alert is underrated and good for people of all skill levels both in and out of chase.

Ignore all the above posts...we’d have to know your playstyle or strategy for marches to as adequately answer your question.

Trying to rush gens? Want freebie second chances for when you make mistakes? Are you being stealthy? Do you want to be chases alot?

You left out too much info. If you let us know what you want to get out of DBD, we can respond accordingly.

I bought the Stranger Thing's package deal when I joined, and I gotta say I never regretted having Inner Strength on almost all of my survivors. I think there was only one it didn't pop up for within the first 40 levels.
