New player and have a question

So I just started playing the game yesterday, but I've watched youtubers play the game so I am familiar with the game but I'm confused, in some of my matches I've been put against red rank players. If I'm correct, isn't that the highest rank in the game? If so, why am I being put against them as a new player? It happens while I'm playing killer if that helps. Also any tips for playing survivors are welcome as I suck at it.

Yes red ranks are the highest tier in the game. The reason your facing them is the match making is absolutely terrible in this game. Those 4 red ranks probably were in que for 10 mins and when the game couldn't find a red killer, it tossed the first available person their way(you). Red rank doesn't exactly mean they are good these days but it still sucks for you. You can increase your rank simply by playing a lot during the month. It doesn't exactly reflect a player's skill. This is one of the big reasons why not many people play killer anymore. It's because new people are being thrown to the wolves and told to "git gud" when they haven't had time to learn how to play.

Bad match making mostly. Rank is just a soft indicator of skill. There's a lot of red rank that play poorly like scrubs, but since they play so much they're in red. While there are some players that are very low rank are extremely good at the game, but hardly play enough till rank up. Its not too hard to rank up as survivor.
