Does the new graphic update mean old laptops won't be able to run DBD? "Super low" settings needed!!

I got a Lenovo Y500 from 2013 with a i7 3rd gen processor and a Nvidia GT650M graphic card

I always run the game with the lowest settings recommended by a guy that edited the files (no v-synnc, 0% resolution), with all, my i7 is reaching lately nearly 90C and I am afraid it may melt/break the laptop...

I haven't tried the PTB, but can we have a "super low" settings feature please? I think I talk for many existing customers

inb4: "do NOT say buy a new laptop"

I do not have any faith in the devs' skillz to optimize the graphics in a manner that low-end machines can run the game safely, since this could be a tough task and they do not have this priority at all (total silence by DBD crew)

-> that is why I just suggested a "super low" config files option to disable all the unnecessary stuff but keeping our chips alive

so let's hope our chips do not melt including Xbox and PSs... at least you can fry eggs while playing the lastest PTB

the point is, the game can be optimized to super-low settings to keep their customers, so why not?

I usually support such things, but not for dbd.

People would exploit it to see as survivor or killer, the whole map at all times. Have seen it in other games before, like as example Counter Strike.

This.. I was on the PTB earlier and the difference between Low and Ultra settings is insane. Low makes it 100X easier to see in maps and ultra makes things super dark.

Considering the fact they have adamantly refused to add colorblind options to this game for over four years and have failed to optimize the game on consoles that have exactly the same specs in each box...

    Yes.

Console is a different thing. If a game is advertised to run on a Console, it should run on it with good performance. Thats the Devs responsibility.

But PCs can be upgraded. If someone does not want to upgrade or cannot afford it, there will be some point in time where they cannot run the game they used to play. So a PC User should not expect that Devs provide a game which can be run on 7 year old Hardware IMO.

I dont think the low settings will help, because we become new Textures

  • Member Posts: 486

it is not downgrading, it is just setting up internal variables from config files to provide better performance for lower machines, so you don't need to be an expert to edit the files

This latest update will make console unplayable as well so lets say that they are almost obligate to do it

How does the game even work on your laptop now without it just like, exploding? I have a fairly new gaming rig & dbd makes it sound like a jet engine.

  • Member Posts: 5,352

like you need to be rich to play dbd this easy way to kill the game for good.

To put a different view, World of Warcraft is now 16??? Years old and still runs on my 20 year old Pc if needed.

  • Member Posts: 355

I do hope that behavior can make optimizations or settings that can get you to work.

If they don't, and you decide you want to get a new PC, talk to me and give me a price. I'll see what I can do.

Will this graphics update make my Xbox1 melt?

  • Member Posts: 5,352

  • Member Posts: 4,759

From my experience with a launch day xbox1, it already is melting.

This is optimization. But optimization does not mean that Hardware which is old and weak can or should run every game.

i just tried it... i usually had around 30-45 fps on lowest settings, depending on the map, which was not cool but ok for me. Now, on new badham preschool, i had 15 fps and the game just crashed after 40 seconds... i will not afford a new PC in the next couple months, so it seems like my dbd career is over after the update :(

I agree, HOWEVER, without getting too far into balance I think the devs have tried to cater to “casual players,” as much as possible. Now casual doesn’t necessarily mean old or slow computer, but often that goes hand in hand. They may lose more players than they expect because of this

  • Member Posts: 17,114

This might be possible. The way I see it - DBD has minimum requirements. If those are met, the game should run at a decent performance. If not, the Devs need to work on it (e.g. I have quite a good PC and get FPS Drops on Yamaoka when a Gen gets completed from time to time and sometimes on Breakable Walls on Badham). Same goes for Console, as I have written before.

But if a PC does not hit the minimum requirements, there is not really anything the Devs can do. They are called minimum requirements for a reason.

Yep, I wasn’t trying to imply every computer should run DBD, sorry if it came that way. I think if you’re playing to plan any games on the computer, they shouldn’t be shocked that you have to update occasional. Whether it’d getting a new graphics card, processor, or a whole new machine.

honestly i dont give a ######### for your condo and your 3500 rig.

the point of my comment is that not everyone can afford rig like yours, and that people like you need to stop being selfish knowing that the people with EVEN minimal recommended specs are going to suffer.

they need to fix their goddamn game, fix bugs, fix servers, fix sounds. even tho i like how the new game is going to look, graphical update is the last thing on the list we needed. and dont tell me that different teams do different parts of game, cuz thats not the point here.

Like i said, NOT EVERYONE can afford to upgrade their PC every second update considering the salaries in some countries.

Good for you and those who succeeded to buy a powerful PC for this "visually gorgeous game".

  • Member Posts: 8,223

I'm more concerned about how these updates will affect console. The game already can barely do a stable 30 FPS 80% of the time, it's just gonna get worse.

BEHAVIOR CAN WE PLEASE GET A HEALTH UPDATE ON CONSOLE.

  • Member Posts: 3,742

I'm not entirely certain, but aren't Glenvale and Midwich already 'upgraded' maps that are live? And yamaoka and badham are just upgraded to that standard?

no i played yamaoke and badham and both are worlds apart from the normal 4.1.2 in terms of performance and graphics, in both matches my game crashed and i just did go back to the normal 4.1.2 after that. There are also completely reworked objects like gens and pallets.

Maybe it's the PTB, i don't know, my framerate in the main menu was also worse than in normal 4.1.2., can be just some settings issue from the PTB

Totally went over your head, so I'll make it simple, I agree with the premise that this game should be optimized way better but to make your point you should not assume anything about anybody here neither should you do personal attack is that simple enough for you to understand? I could dumb it down way more too we never know, I totally understand that maybe you need me to highlight certain part of the text.l because reading is hard.

Also they won't introduce a lower "low" settings it needs a minimum of "fog" etc in the game to be fair to everyone.

I don't think I can be more clear, DEV NO GOOD WITH UNREAL 4 MUCH BOOBOO.

True, but considering super low settings can be exploited heavily by people who have high tier platforms, that is simply not an option.

Yes, a bigger and more inclusive community is nice, but 7 years is a long time. Hardware becomes exponentially cheaper every single year. That means a piece of hardware that would cost 1000$ 7 years ago, would probably only cost about 175$ right now, if not less.

Not everyone can afford to update their computer everytime a game decides to update, heck, no one can. However, you can update your hardware every 5-7 years to be able to run newer updates.

You cant play java minecraft 1.16 on the same platforms that are able to run java minecraft 1.12. You cant play current Destiny 2 on the same platforms that could run Destiny 2 two years ago. Just like you cant play 2020 Dead By Daylight on the same platforms that could run 2015 Dead By Daylight. Sure, optimisation can make the amount of platforms able to run both versions slightly bigger, but you cannot expect the devs to compensate for someone who has a 7+ year old piece of hardware that has never been updated.

Basically, upgrade your hardware, even if its only slightly. Sell your old hardware to students or for scraps to get the most money out of it and invest in something new. Preferably something that could last 10 years, but if you cant afford that, at least invest in something that can last 5 years. The games that will release in 5 years are being worked on with current optimal hardware, and it takes another 5 years before that hardware isnt capable of running the newest games again. 2000$ for a pc or laptop might seem a lot, but thats only 200$ per year that you need to set aside if you want a fully new upgrade. 50$ a year if you replace your hardware piece by piece. It's not that expensive to plan ahead. Gaming comes from 2 sides. The customers and the devs need to consider both situations. Dev's design their games +-5 years of hardware, customers should keep their hardware up to date if they want to remain active in the gaming community.

I have that problem now, I run on medium as ultra runs perfectly fine but is way to dark to see, I mean crippling disadvantaged dark. As a predominately killer play the dark atmosphere is great but I'm completely blind as a result, I need predator heat vision or something.

As for OP, regardless of your inb4, you do need a new laptop. Its 7 years old, probably close to 8 years old. You either need a new laptop, or new hardware to replace the current ones.

As for my advice, look into Lenovo's trade-in possibilities. A lot of companies accept older models for scrap while applying quite a hefty discount on a newer model. You might be able to swap in the 2013 laptop for a 450$ laptop from 2017 with a 100$ discount. If they dont have a trade-in possibility available on their websites, you could always contact their marketing team. Its often much more profitable for companies to scrap old models rather than buying new resources, and considering they probably werent going to sell that laptop much anymore anyway, they are happy to sell it for a discount. That way you can upgrade your current laptop for a (relatively) cheap price, while easily doubling your performance in general.

If you cant get a new laptop because of parents or something, simply ask them if it is possible to trade it in for a newer model while practically not costing them much and chipping in as much as you are willing to spend on a laptop, with them maybe helping out a tiny bit. 7 years is a long time for hardware to remain accessible for a game.

Why stop at that then? I have an old pc without a graphics card running windows 95 in the attic, how dare they not include that.... that's the big trade off between consoles and pc. Consoles pretty much guarantee the hardware is going to work for the life of the console. Pc not so much.

  • Member Posts: 891

I didn't buy my PC for DBD. I wasn't even playing DBD when I bought my PC, I was on a break from it and refused to play it for the past year or two. & No one is buying a PC just for Dead by Daylight. Which is part of the problem with your outlook--no one upgrades their PCs for Dbd, they do it because hardware has a very limited lifespan and is constantly being made obsolete by advancements in technology. Someone's 7 year old laptop isn't just going to struggle with DBD, it's going to struggle to do anything.

I have around 15 fps on PTB with lowest graphics and lowest resolution with an intel core of 9something. I would like something to fix AA before anything else. Playing against the new killer is hard when I can't react all that quickly.

  • Member Posts: 1,596

OP uses a seven year old laptop. He should have issues with ANY newer game. With just about 300-400€ he could buy a new pc which totally outshines his old laptop.

  • Member Posts: 486

so if it is just 400 euros I will send you my mailing address for the laptop, thanks rich boy /s

  • Member Posts: 1,448

i usually play on a desktop pc but since i'm in holidays i could only bring my laptop and it's running just fine ^^ i mean 30 fps isn't as bad as people claim it is. ( 30 fps and 125ms )

  • Member Posts: 1,596

400$ is pretty cheap for a new pc or laptop. And it even will be better by magnitudes compared to the 7 years old laptop. Heck, you can even find used pcs/ laptops with better power, maybe only costs you 50 bucks or so. I think we shouldn't cater for players demanding to put ultra low settings so they just can keep the ancient hardware. It will look aweful, potentially be exploitable, and likely hinder major graphics improvments for all the other players. DbD is a fairly recent game, and if you want to play it, you should have fairly recent hardware to play it. If you refuse to buy new better hardware or just simply can't, than tough luck for you, the game will unplayable for you eventually. Deal with it.
