What are Freddy's dream snares?
When stepping on them, hands appear to emerge from them and try to grab you. This makes me wonder, what exactly are they supposed to be? Demons reaching out for you or something?

Dreams, its likely Freddys controlling the blood to morph into hands. He then uses that to hold survivors back.

It could also be Freddy manifesting the souls of his victims. In dream warriors I believe we see him chewing on the faces of some of the victims of the movie. Although we don't know for sure if its just an illusion he create or the actual souls of those he claimed.

As I believe he is based on the new freddy (Jackie Earle Hayley) I don't think any of the Robert Englund stuff counts.

It's my personal headcanon that it's something along these lines. The hands reaching out of the pools of blood grasping and tugging at you as you run past are the tormented souls of his victims, hence why you hear screaming when this happens it's the tortured souls crying out as the try to break free from their captor.
Regardless the characters powers are still essentially exactly the same. Even if the origin, story, and character itself may be slightly altered in the reboot. As well even though it's not technically Robert Englund that we see in the game, the devs can still decide to make extremely subtle references like this if they choose as long as those connections aren't openly confirmed or stated to violate the terms of the licensing agreement they have going on.
Also many people are still waiting on a potential Robert Englund legendary skin(s) if the devs can somehow work that out. So there's still that as well.
