Why is pregame so long?

Ok só two questions here.

Why is matchmaking so long? Considering how many people play and how it barely filters by rank you would think it would be quicker.

And also, is the one minute countdown necessary? It adds even more waiting.

I play on the east coast and my queue times since crossplay have been pretty quick on both sides. If one side seems slow, usually the other side is lacking players so consider playing the other role to spice things up!

The one minute is meant to give the killer prep time for the game itself given that its a 1 v 4.

As for long ques its mainly on the survivor side due to no one wanting to really play killer if they don't have to in this gen rush meta.

At peak times, killer wait times are instant because there's far less killers (for many reasons). Survivor takes longer because there's, as stated, far less killers, so you have to wait for a killer to become available. And the actual 1-minute countdown is to give everyone time to prepare - survivors decide what to bring based on their teammates, killers decide what to bring based on the survivors.

also the game looks for average group level (1-4 people or killer) to be plus or minus 6 for killer and other party, then if a match isn't quick to be found then it will start widening the search window till it can put you in the right match. so in essence a solo survivor should not take that long to get into a lobby, but a killer would take a bit longer as it's trying to match 4 people to the killer, then 2 or 3 man swfs will populate where they can. a 4 man swf should on average take about the same time or less than killer to match up
