You were standing there on killer's end and killer should be able to do what they see so no this can never be fixed, or they can make projectiles curve a little (for survivor's side) but then everybody will complain about hatchets going through walls.

I don’t believe I was. I say this because as a player who plays every killer, I’ll go for the shot as Huntress because all I have to lose is a hatchet. Quite often, to my surprise, the exact same thing happens from my view as killer; I’ll hit the air/empty box that the survivor left behind while they go down. It looks strange on my part as well.

What you see vs what the server sees and the killer sees is different. From your view the hatchet was just thrown and was still coming towards where you were. From the server's view you were already hit and down. Who knows what the killer saw.
That's why in first person shooters you could fire 6 bullets at an enemy and instantly die, while in the kill cam it shows you only firing once with the enemy already firing upon you. The enemy probably saw something even more different from the kill cam. U were already hit and dead from the server's view.

Lol at the people who've never played an online game before. You could look at tournaments in other games with near 0 ping and still see a bunch of bs hits.

90% of the replies completely missed the point.
Hit validation is on for all kind of attacks. What you should be asking is what your ping is. If it's really good, this kind of hits should be rejected. Theoretically.
Hint: hit validation doesn't work as advertised. I did some archives myself and as someone with a 32 ping in lobbies, I still got ridiculous hits from the usual laggers. I will post a video later with some examples.

You wanna give some examples? Because the only one I can think of that's anywhere close to being this bad was CSGO's replay system back in the early days, and that's from a replay, not from the player's perspective.

They have completely different hitboxes.That's comparing apples to oranges

The survivor might have moved to that empty spot in that time but it wasn't shown to you yet because there's so much delay and it looked fine to survivor or server in some way. The devs have said the hitboxes are completely fine, except I don't trust that for the hatchets. Or really any projectiles are really buggy. With plague I can hit through the same survivor twice in a row with same puke stream and only third cross it actually registers the hit. Plague is one of my favourite killers but this garbage hit validation makes it not fun obviously.

My ping is always under 46ms. I still get questionable hits.
