Ranked Too High, Not Having Fun
Hello. I wanted to quickly get other players opinions on this.
I've always heard of DBD as a rather toxic game, so whenever it was on sale I avoided it like the plague. Some friends convinced me to play it saying "It only gets toxic at lower ranks." So I decided to pick it up and after some initial frustration I started having fun. Started working on getting perks, getting better at looping and juking or killing depending on who I was playing as.
Then I kept ranking, and ranking, and ranking. Now I'm red rank, and ho boy.
This sucks. This sucks a lot.
Now it seems like almost every single game is with a killer who just absolutely dominates. I've had several games where the map pressure was so intense we never got a single generator handled despite trying our mutual best.
Friends say "Just do SWF otherwise you'll keep getting crappy team mates." Well now my friends are closing in on my rank and now we're all having a bad time. The general consesus seems to be "Wait for rank reset."
I still really like the game I was playing, but I really have hit the cap on the skill level I really want to be at at this game. I feel like I should be closer to winning and losing at 50-50, or since the game is about a killer I should probably win at least 30-40% of my games at my skill level? Instead of where it's at now where it feels closer to 5-10% if that. Getting better would be nice, but then getting better means ranking up, so I'm chasing this endless loop of always being kind of crap for where I'm at. Also I've been seeing a ton more toxicity in chat after games are over.
Is there any advice or feedback? I understand this isn't a terribly uncommon experience based on random google searching around and lurking.
I was thinking of waiting for reset, playing another game (I mean I got a good 80 hours out of DBD so that's a pretty solid chunk of time for a game to be played) or smurfing. There's also just depipping intentionally but that's just screwing over randoms. (For some reason despite all these crappy games I keep safety pipping, I'm stuck in this red hellhole.)
Thanks for reading!

Can't really relate. I've been at rank1 for a bit now as survivor, and I solo que 100% of the time. Love the game. I don't experience 10 back to back losses, or 10 wins in a row. I win some, I will lose some. It also depends on the teammate quality you get. I've had rank 2-4s who have made r17-19 mistakes and costed people their 1st hook, gone down too quick, or just overall didn't do much for the team. I get to endgame scoreboard thinking, oh they must be lower ranked and I'm astonished to find people are red ranks and doing this. But I've also had really intense matches where all 4 of us survivors know what were doing and so does the killer, which usually ends up in a pretty tight match.
The matchmaking system and rank system are both very bad in this game. Its far too easy for people to rank up by doing almost nothing, and then they hit red ranks and realize they're in a tough spot b/c they're playing against better killer mains now, who know how to pressure, not tunnel, not face camp, etc.

I would say its not that hard to get good enough for red rank. Its not like in other games were at the highest rank you need to be really good.
It helps to play both roles to understand the game better and sadly there is no good tutorial ingame, but there some on youtube.

Man the kill rank is that high? That makes a lot of sense. Where are you able to get those numbers? I'll check out Otz, I've heard that name a few times before but I never actually looked at what that is. Thanks for the advice (And the anecdotes from everyone else.) My killer rank is pretty low, so it may be worth getting better there.
Leaning towards playing another game for a while.

Whenever the toxicity comes up hammer the collapse chat button. Assume teabagging/nodding is out to tilt you so you play worse never take it to heart many people want you upset so you play worse you define your own self worth not some jokers on the internet. Survival does not define a good survivor focus on your chase game always be thinking how can I do this better. Never ever say there is nothing I could do. In 99% of the games you play, there is always at least one or two decisions that could have been better.

It's a bit easier to get into red rank as survivor than the other side, so a lot of killers you'll be against (at least if matchmaking behaves) will have a good idea of what they're doing, will often have good perks, be pretty merciless etc
Rank reset doesn't do much anymore either. If you're willing to record + upload a couple of games here people can give you more specific advice on things you can improve on. Some youtubers do gameplay reviews as well but having that many people watching you might be a bit daunting

The game is actually very survivor sided. So its basicly you still learning the game. I play solo survivor in red ranks and use to escape between 72 and 75% of my games, since the mori change i escape some more.
With better perks, map knowledge, and a team you can count on the game becomes incredible easy, toolboxes and stuff also helps.
Also the matchmaking in this game is just bad, you can play vs rank 1 killers one night, and rank 15 killers the next.
We heard a better matchmaking is coming, but we dont even know if thats true anymore.

Might just be me, but I just don't enjoy red ranks because it seems like there are fewer players up there that want to goof off. I get thrown into red ranks pretty consistently as Survivor running meme builds, and it feels like everyone in Red Rank runs the same few builds- and when you try to goof off with them a little in a trial, most of them won't bite, and many more will get crabby with you in post-game chat for small, meme-y jabs.
Imho, I kinda just wish this game wasn't taken so seriously in high rank. I really just don't see this as a competitive game, so when I get stuck with super hardcore competitive players back to back, it's pretty annoying. Doesn't happen usually for too many games in a row without a small break, but since those breaks usually come in the form of lower-ranked players who are more willing to meme around, high rank tends to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I hit red ranks, just rank 4, and immediately the fun of the game evaporated. It's super sweaty, survivors get pissed at you for stupid reasons, and killers are mean and think that the only person whose fun matters is their own. Everyone uses [BAD WORD] strategies to win because they can't do it any other way, and if their usual strat isn't working, they ragequit. There's maybe a handful of rank 1 players who actually deserve to be there, because they're really that good. They don't have to do dumb [BAD WORD] for a 4k and ruin everyone else's match just to prove a point.
Doesn't matter what people say about this game being survivor-sided. If a killer doesn't want you to have a good game, you won't. And they'll treat you like a bot or a stupid child and give absolutely zero [BAD WORD]. They'll tell you "It's just a game lol why u mad," and "I'm the killer I'm doing my job," ignoring that a survivor's "job" is to try to survive, but if a killer decides they don't want them to do that, because [insert ridiculous made-up reason], it's totally acceptable?
The things survivors get mad about, and build to avoid, are things that make games short, boring, and a waste of time. The things killers get mad about are largely things they perceive as "threatening" that... aren't. They just don't want to lose because they base their success as killer on 4Ks and how fast they can end a match.

Yeah, I get you. This game really is unfun once you get close to the red ranks. All the killers use the same builds, it's all tunneling and camping the most they can and trying as hard as they can to slaughter the survivors. I think I have more fun against high rank survivors than killer.
I got stuck in red ranks for 2 months once I got there and then I decided toijust play other things. I even gifted my friends new games to replace dbd and I've been playing more variety now. I'm trying to stay at rank 10-9 as survivor now. I think there's where you can have the most fun and don't need to care so much about meta perks. Sometimes I will die, sometimes I will survive, but it isn't a sweaty match in which anything goes for the objective.
As killer I try and stay around rank 14-15 that is what I think my level is and then I can play killer even without having many add ons or perks and usually not deal with people way more experienced than me that I can barely touch.
But that's it. Once I get to rank 9 at survivor or rank 12 as killer, I just stop playing until the reset, unless my friends really insist on playing it, in which case I try my best not to pip.
