Inconsistent value from BBQ & Chili?
I normally do not run this perk when playing killer, but I've recently have been trying out perks I normally do not run and as of late have been trying out BBQ (I normally run Whispers) and I find that its value is extremely inconsistent when I play in red ranks. Many times I see no auras and I can it can basically be useless in terms of finding people. I don't care about bloodpoints so there's also that.
I do know as playing survivor, people will often go into lockers to prevent getting seen from BBQ, and this seems like what happens to me a lot. I've also heard of survivors being able to obscure their aura by hiding behind a generator from a particular angle, and it just ends up making the perk's value very inconsistent. Another thing I heard is that if you don't see auras in BBQ that you should "know" they're within 40 metres of a hook, and I know this isn't inherently true or likely the case as playing survivor people do this even when they're much further than 40 metres from a hook, so it's not giving me good information many times as to where to go.
Wondering has anyone else had this issue, and why they run it other than for BP

Nah I don’t get a ton of value from it beyond the blood points most of the time.
It’s only really good on high mobility killers, other than that it’s kinda meh to me compared to other tracking perks

And yet, you find many Nerf BBQ/BBQ OP threads.

Mostly bp but sometimes it comes in clutch to find someone so im good with it.

It's alright. Can be nice knowing where someone is so you don't have to stay around the hook. Like others have said it's mainly really good on high mobility killers.
I run it on everyone for the bps.

Honestly bitter murmur is better if you want to see survivors, but really who runs bbq for the aura reading

Survivor tracking perks are all QoL perks. You can do without them if you're experienced and playing killer optimally. A lot of killers, 99% probably, never develop good game sense because they crutch on BBQ, Whispers, Nurse's, etc.
Whispers is terrible. Survivor spawns are static relative to killer spawns. You can gain 90% of Whispers through basic spawn knowledge.
BBQ is nice for points, but look at it this way: you probably passed by a gen or two during your chase. Were they being worked on? Hook the survivor by another gen and look at that one. Is it being worked on? Where are the other gens? Should you even be patrolling all of the other gens you don't have intel on? Probably not. That leaves one or two places that you even care about. What good does BBQ do at that point?
I could go on for every tracking perk, but the gist is "learn to track without them and run perks that actually do things"

This is common. The auras BBQ shows are a nice bonus, they keep a BP perk from being completely useless, but yeah, there are so many counters that survivors with a modicum of experience can avoid ever being seen with it. I've had enough matches where I never saw a single aura that I often forget to look around after hooking.
When I see auras with it, it's great, sometimes it's invaluable, showing me what gen the last survivor is on. Other times I don't get a single use out of it an entire match. There are much better tracking perks, BBQ really is mostly for the BP.
If you want, you can think of BBQ as being a bit of a slowdown perk, forcing survivors to stop repairing gens for a moment and hide. However, you might get that benefit without actually running BBQ since it's not like most of them will know for sure if you're running it. Just turn in a circle after hooking someone to keep up the illusion.

BBQ's biggest strength for me personally over perks like Whispers or Nurse's is getting a feel for the pace of the game and what Survivors are doing, and it gives you that info when it's most important to have it IMO. Survivor locations aren't just handy for finding your next chase target. You can often figure out if they're planning to go for a save or planning to work on a gen, and if so, which one?
Of course, Bloodpoints help too. I still think I'd use it a reasonable amount without them, though.

Normally I only see 1 and they are across the map makeing it questionable if I should go there

If you want real value from bbq pair it with iron maiden about 5s after they will be seen
Edit if you want full tracking play doc with this

Only run BBQ for the extra Bloodpoints.
There are too many ways for Survivors to obscure their aura, don't rely on it helping you in a match.

Whispers bad? You are crazy. There is no other perk in the game that will tell you with 100% confidence if a survivor is in the area or not.
Plenty of maps have relatively random spawn locations. Especially on a 32m terror radius killer, you could check a gen at the start you “think” someone might be at and then wander off only for a survivor to immediately start on it because they were hiding behind some debris.
When you have corrupt intervention, every second counts and every second you are not in a chase is wasting your perk slot.
No other perk in the game gets me into my first chase as quickly, as well as giving me critical information such as “should I even bother kicking this gen?” Whispers is off? It’s worth stopping to kick it.
No other perk secures my 4K as often. When I close the hatch with whispers they are almost 100% dead. If I want to slug for the 4k to spite some annoying survivors, whispers is the best perk in the game to do it with.
There’s a reason tons of streamers such as Ohtofu and Otzdarva consider it an extremely strong perk.

Whispers is strong and spawn locations are not as random as you would think.

It’s map dependent. If I load into Hawkins I usually know they either spawned upstairs or they spawned in the portal room.
Azarovs resting place? ~Maybe~ someone spawned across from me.
Suffo pit? ~Maybe~ some spawned across from me.
Sanctum of wrath? ~Maybe~ someone spawned across from me.
Load into a map like fractured cowshed? They could be literally anywhere.
It’s the only perk that will let you know for sure.

Without going into much detail. Azarovs Resting Place for example, three survivors will spawn on the opposite side of the map while 1 will spawn the same side as you. This true at least 9/10 time.

And yet with whispers I can be sure or not, because I’ve definitely seen people not spawn there and they spawn in the middle instead.
A map like rotten fields? You have no idea where anyone is.
The difference between whispers or not is many times the difference between me getting into my first chase in 15 seconds of the game starting, securing my first hook and clearing out multiple pallets near a 3 gen, and delivering a pop to the 4th gen. Then I’m in a great position to secure a half state on the first hook and also a victory.
Or I just waste time searching for ghosts, lose out on an entire minute+ of corrupt. The gen I didn’t find anyone at gets completed, I’m taking my first chase out near corrupted gens, and I’m moving onto the corrupted 3 gen and could be in a very bad situation.
It’s not required but it fits my playstyle enough I always try to find a spot for it. It can be useless on super small maps but a life saver on the massive ones.

Like I said.
Not doubting the strength of Whispers as someone who runs it. But it and game sense goes hand in hand. You and the post you quoted are both correct and mistaken.
