Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Why is this community so childish?

To make it clear, I don't mean the whole community. But I noticed something today again. The new killer is live and so many people are crying, arguing and being homophobic. A few days ago everyone was hyped for the hints on Twitter were already was hinted that it will have something to do with kpop and Korean. But now, since it's not a female killer but a men killer everyone is saying the design is bad and not fitting... I was reading the story and this killer is extremely good fitting.

We're talking outfit-wise, it stands out and goes against the normal palette/mood/tone of the game (which I really don't mind). People can have their opinions and its not necessarily homophobic, but I get your viewpoint.

I did not use Twitter so when I saw the killer I was shocked. As for his perks it is ok but for power I will say when there is Huntress it is not that great. For the model I was not expecting that. I was expecting something dark and gothic. Yes maybe the killer has great backstory and etc... but the killer is more like bad dude from a cartoon in my opinion and not scary like other killer. Maybe I will change my mind but to be honest I did not like it and I understand why people dont like it. For the main idea of the DBD killers and survivors, this new killer is so colorful for this dark gothic world. Maybe the DBD is gonna be change his darker world but it is my preference.

For the people that is also including me we will get use to it. I like playing DBD but I think that this killer is not exactly something I was expecting from the darker world of the DBD.

The design is bad it looks like suicide squad joker which also had bad design in bad movie.

If not counting twins and legion there are 6 female killer and 13 male now 14 with trickster. Demogorgon not included because don't know looks just like plant monster to me.

This community is indeed ######### childish. Everyone needs to get over themselves and actually have some fun in the game. Oh you don't like it? Well then quit the damn game.

Honestly, at a glance, I really thought DBD did a crossover with Seven Deadly Sins because he kinda looked like Ban when I first saw him.

That being said, I very much like his design.

Eh, the hot pink pants and banana yellow jacket are a no for me from a purely aesthetic POV. It's just not color scheme that screams Evil to me, but rather edgelord looking for attention. His mori is for the most part okay, but something that I personally don't see as horror. it's more flashy, action movie aesthetic. Outside of that, he seems to have an interesting mechanic that may need some refinement. Could be very fun to play against, which is all I care about.

There are a lot of fragile and insecure players of DBD (obviously not all, and there's a thriving LGBT+ community). I think there's some weird power fantasies of being a killer and hunting down and killing people that...less savory types really enjoy. They can picture themselves as Trapper or Bubba or Freddy, and they love that image of themselves, but when the Trickster arrives they start feeling differently and don't know how to self-reflect on their own feelings in the game, and get weird about it.

It's kind of scary, but the best counter is not to take them too seriously or let their problematic views dominate the discourse.

I hate the new killer for so many reasons. It does not however make me homophobic or racist. I'm so fed up telling people this the last few days. People not liking the killer for legit reasons (not finding him scary, bad design, not liking the ability etc etc ) does not make that person racist nor homophobic. I'm not saying your like this but its like censorship where you can't say a bad thing about the killer without being labelled either of the above. Its such a dangerous view point, that of the Illiberal Liberals where they like to stand up for things (generally left wing) but if you disagree with them you're wrong end of story (totalitarianism ironically a right wing view point)

I hate the new killer but I am neither racist nor homophobic nor am I acting childish

I'm not defending what the BHVR balance team does but jesus I stg, the community just loves finding ways to get angry at BHVR.

Also the LGBT speculations were because of the Mightee One logo had the bisexual flag colors.

It's okay to dislike a killer's design, looks, power, etc. but I haven't seen anyone call someone out as a racist or homophobe for disliking the new killer. I think OP was only exaggerating about the homophobia.

Anyways unnecessary opinion time: I think the Trickster as a character barely fits in DBD but I still like him, innocent looking K-pop idol turned sadistic serial killer and mutilates his victims to record their screams of pain for his music. Also his design and personality go well with his lore.

You want respect for your way of thinking, respect others..

You are already being an @ss for calling CHILDISH and homophobic to the ones that do not think like you.. when your own ideas are just stupid..

you are a sheep ... nothing more..

I think we need to step away from the idea of people not liking the killer because homophobia or that "everyone" doesn't like the killer because it's male and not female. That's over-simplifying the issue. There are some out there who don't like the killer because of those reasons, but equally there are some who don't like it because of the design or power. It's dangerous to throw everyone into the same pot.

Personally, I like the chapter overall! The perks sound fun (especially Star Struck and Smash Hit!). The killer does seem fun to play - granted, not the strongest, but for me it's more about fun than winning. The story behind them is actually entertaining. The survivor is also different, being both a more self-centred character (as opposed to the altruistic nature of the others) and in my head canon that she is trans. Sure, I admit the killer isn't my cup of tea in appearance, but actually DBD needs the variety, and if this chapter attracts newer players because of its kpop origins then great! Plus, no matter what a killer looks like, no-one will be as annoying as DBD's own Scoiby villain: Ghost Face.

You think those people are only Killer? Seems more likely the fragility would be on the survivor side. I mean to be bullied and brought down by an effeminate male killer might make some funny people uncomfortable. An unlike Killers, who could just decide not to play him, survivors would not have that option to forcibly not face him so they would be more vocal about how they want him gone.

Assuming I bought into the thought that the Alphabet community is truly being targeted and harassed but I’m on PS4 and I’m not exposed to any homophobia or whatever. Most of my message exchanges, that turn ugly, very rarely go that direction.

Never been messaged by a killer. Constantly raged at by the survivor side.

There are countless youtube montages of survivor salt

The survivor side is the toxic childish one

I have never played another game where people go out of their way to find my profile and leave vulgar or rude messages because i didn't follow their made up rule book.

  • Mooks
    Mooks Member Posts: 15,082

It’s not exclusive to one side. There are toxic/immature people on both sides.

just because I am mostly seeing that behavior from one side doesn’t mean I should deny that the other side can be just as toxic.

there are generally more survivor players because of the asymmetrical nature of the game hence you see more from that side. Also they can easily buddy up in the chat. But generally speaking killers are not better. And actually they are making up rules and try to tell survivors how to play all the time just the same.

The community is childish because the only people who can spend over 2.5k hours on it without making money out of it have some sort of issue, 100%. Take this game too seriously and end up acting the way you and some others have described.

It doesn't help that the optimal way to play is to deprive the other side of the fun parts of the game. Killer = Rush all gens in record speeds or incessantly taunt them due to skill gap (matchmaking). Survivor = Tunnel, camp, slug a team of solos/low ranks, preventing potential fun chases or interesting plays. All are valid strategies, and yet I'm convinced these are a root cause to the incessant salt and tantrums in this game, which lead to a very smelly breed of toxicity.

Those that complain about design and something not fitting in the game are talking out of their asses and are truly saying: "I don't like the K-pop industry, it what my annoying relative listens to, but I'll rationalize it in a way to sound smarter."

I really don't think it's homophobia, it's just people being reactionary edgelords. That's the issue with the fanbase of DBD; it's a bunch of toxic edgy pseuds who are really not the best people to socialize. That's not to say I'm any better, it's just that this game attracts the worst of the worst.

  • Baby_Victor

It really does attract the worst of the worst...anecdotal, but I was watching some drag queens playing together on Twitch, SWF but not trying hard, laughing and having fun. Not calling out anything other than "Save me!" or "I'm headed for the hook." They weren't exactly being toxic other than winning fairly easily.

Post game, the killer came into the chat, ranting about SWF and (upon seeing the queens playing) using anti-trans language I won't repeat (none of them playing identified as trans, the player on stream is a drag artist) and it was just disgusting. That killer got banned from chat quick, but it's sad to think that because it happened on a third party platform, they (and many like them) are still playing and possibly continuing that behavior.

What's the difference between a homophobe and someone who just spouts homophobia to be "edgy"? None whatsoever, IMO.

Well, I don't think they actually have any transphobia built into them, they're just childish salt mines who have no idea how to even behave in a dignified manner, so they denigrate others in order to make themselves feel better.

Well, intent. Homophobes, in the broadest context, are people who harbor hatred for gay people. Most times, it's because of some book from ages ago with a bunch of obscure laws about this and that. When edgelords try to jump on the reactionary hype train, I doubt they've ever even met a homosexual before. They're just doing it for the attention and shock-value.

The important part comes in that every edge lord eventually decides to be a functional member of society and stops caring about being an emo or whatever. People who hold vehemence and ill-will, on the other hand, are incorrigibly detrimental.

  • fray1919
    fray1919 Member Posts: 199

I go with the old adage of "intent follows the bullet." If you're using transphobic (or any other "-phobic") language to attack someone, you're transphobic.

    YMMV

  • ShamelessPigMain
    ShamelessPigMain Member Posts: 1,878

Well there can be multiple possible intents behind that bullet. After all, if intent is enough to differentiate between murder and manslaughter, I'd think it would still hold weight here.

  • fray1919
    fray1919 Member Posts: 199

This is so off-topic, but that's exactly what the expression means.

Like I said, YMMV. I currently believe that if you say a -ist comment, you're upholding -ist systems (that members of a certain group can hurt others using -ist means), and are -ist yourself.

Honestly couldn't care less if bhvr announced tomorrow certain characters are gay or straight. It's a video game that has characters with their own backstories and I'll play whoever I think looks or plays cool. Some people are so insecure in real life about this stuff it spills into their gaming community.

I'm not familiar with unusual turns of phrase, so I pretty much guessed what those meant. I'll add them to my vocabulary arsenal though.

I would agree with your interpretation, but it's nuances of human language like sarcasm that throw wrenches into it. I deride all sorts of people and their values that I don't like, but I'm certainly not supporting them. Why? Because my intention isn't to support their institutions, it's to denigrate them. Same thing with edgelords with no clue of what they're saying. They're doing it for attention, and nobody really takes them seriously.

This isn't unique to Dead by Daylight. You see it all the time in the Overwatch community. It happened a couple years ago in Paladins when the Devs made an off-the-cuff joke that Fernando was gay and there was one hell of an uproar (he isn't, but whether that was because it really was a joke or they reversed course after the outcry is unknown).

And I'm positive there are other examples as well.

Dead by Daylight is neither special nor unique within gaming communities on this topic.
