Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Surge is better than ruin

I said it, fight me.

For starters, ruin gets cleansed in 9 seconds. Surge has that nice 8% immediate loss too; all that needs to happen is perhaps getting rid of the basic attack requirement and the cooldown and we're set.

I dont use both of the perk but I can say that Surge can be more useful than Ruin. Many survivor have found your ruin quite fast and sometimes ruin does not work at all cause they rush the gens so fast which makes the ruin useless. However with surge not only you create pressure but for each downed surv you regress the gens.

Okay so I like surge and I always hated using ruin even back when you could still kick gens but if ruin is actually still up and you get people off the gens it absolutely stronger than surge. They should take out the 40 second cooldown and make it so for 40 seconds after a gen is surged if a survivor lets go within that time it will begin regressing.

People just think Ruin is bad because they cannot pressure generators effectively, and this is coming from a killer main.

It's not even close to as good as Ruin. Sorry bud but it seems you have no idea what you are talking about.

    Here's a weird analogy

If ruin wasn't a hex, everyone and their dog would equip it and never remove it

If surge was a hex, nobody would run it

Although I have some agreements with the sentiment because a ruin that stays up all game does nothing for you if you can't pressure survivors from the get-go. Likewise surge does nothing for you if you don't down survivors near gens that are being worked on

You know 8% is less than 8 seconds for a solo, less than 4 for 2 survivors... It doesn't work with powers, has a cool down and doesnt always hit a gen. Ruin is really strong providing you pressure and the totem isn't cleansed obviously

Surge is more situational though. You need to down a survivor with a basic attack and be close to generators for it to work. This makes it hard for killers such as nurse or huntress to get use out of it. It also doesn't work with billy or bubba's chainsaw, same for Oni's demon strike. It only works with basic attacks.

The effect of ruin is far more powerful than the effect of surge and if it lasts even for 3 minutes, it will do far more than surge could in a match.

Surge is more consistent than ruin though, but it is not better than ruin.

Until it operates off of power hits it will be trash tier for a majority of killers ruins flexible. That cant be understated. Ya it's nice when surge can work on deathslinger or freddy. Also consider the fact that in the early game the map is incredibly favouring survivor because all of the pallets are up most of the powerful loops are available. Ruin regardless of whether you can score a down or not is slowing the game down. Anyone who thinks ruin is a weak perk has no idea how to play with ruin.

use both, they can synergize and surge helps with ruin's shortcomings

If you play against good survivors, ruin will do nothing for you. Ruin or Ruin+Undying only hurts bad players and if you play against bad players in the first place and still think you need ruin then im sorry to tell you but you're probably not as good in DBD as you think.

Ruin, sometimes even without undying, is run effectively against the best players on a consistent basis and is a tournament staple. It's effective at all levels of play.

Surge is reliable but it is not nearly as strong as Ruin is, even considering it's a cleansable hex totem.

Survivors can also actively counter play surge by getting enough distance from generators being worked on, which is usually their default direction anyways as it pulls you away from the objective.

Ruin also synergizes with almost every killer and play approach, where Surge requires M1 down synergy to even take effect, something that won't happen with every killer consistently.

Ruin applies surge to a generator every 16 seconds (or less I believe) worth of regression basically if a survivor is removed from it, surge has a cooldown of 40 seconds so Ruin applies far more damage in a shorter window of time.

It also applies to every generator regardless of distance, so that damage is exponentially increased as every time other survivors on other gens have to go and heal, rescue, or do anything else for any reason. Even though surge can trigger on multiple gens, the amount of damage it might often do all game is generally out classed by ruin in the first 60 - 90 seconds of the game, let alone if it remains up longer.

Surge is an amazing perk, I have a list of killers that are really good with Surge:

    • Trapper
    • Wraith
    • Nurse
    • Myers
    • Hag
    • Doc
    • Freddy
    • Pig
    • Clown
    • Spirit
    • Legion (Best user of Surge IMO)
    • GF
    • Slinger

For any other killer you'd probably be using PGTW or Ruin. Surge is amazing with PGTW on any of the killers listed (except Hag).

8% of a gen is about 6.4 charges it loses. and then it loses 1/4 charge a second

Ruin takes that away in 6.4 seconds. And then keeps going doing 1 charge a second

in the scenario of catching a survivor of guard on a gen and downing them ruin will probably have done what surge did before you wiped your weapon. And then kept going. If you didn't get the down Surge did nothing while ruin kept going.

Ruin is WAY stronger then surge. It's not even close. If killer and survivor are equally skilled and ruin stays up. The killer probably wins unless the survivors went full genrush+key mode

What you are trying to say is that Surge is more consistant then ruin. Cause you can't lose it. And even then. Every 6.5 seconds ruin is active on 1 gen you got a surge trigger. How many times do you activate surge in a match? Especially with the cooldown.

Let's say you trigger it 5 times which is extremly generous seeing how it has a 40 second cooldown and requires a basic attack within the range of a generator. That means that if ruin has been active on 1 gen for 33 seconds you got more vallue out of it. 16.5 seconds if it's active on 2 gens. Even if ruin only stays up 3 minutes you probably got that vallue. If it stays up longer it just wins the game for you.

Nothing is stopping you from running both though. Iirc they changed surge that it can damage regressing gens as wel now

I play prayer beards spirit to combo it with surveillance, but I can't use it efficiently because it's cleansed.
