Is chat censorship really necessary to this extent? Thoughts...

Just to start, I think chat censorship is needed to an extent. Certain words/phrases like slurs and highly offensive language should 100% be blocked no question, but I'm not convinced chat censorship to the extent of the system that has been implemented is really necessary.

Wouldn't it just be easier to encourage the community to report inappropriate comments made by players? It surely doesn't take long for a moderator to tell if a comment is offensive or not, and if it is, ban the player who said it and automatically notify the reporter that the player was banned.

I think they brought an outside source to make this chat filter, and obviously they don't want words like Myers or Meg to be banned.

Don't know why they didn't just put it out during a hotfix after removing some very basic, unnecessary filtered words. Day 1 of the PTB people were talking about what words needed to be removed from the filter, like the ones above, yet nothing changed.

I personally believe there shouldn’t be any filter or censorship in the chat. True I play on Xbox, so this doesn’t effect me directly as there’s no filter on Xbox messages.

But this is already a mature rated game, so bad language and naughty words shouldn’t be an issue. And if you really don’t want to see anything you don’t like in chat, there is already the option to close it

I agree to an extent, but I definitely think certain words or phrases should be blocked.

But the basis of what you're saying makes sense to me for sure. It's a mature game. Bad language shouldn't be a problem, but if it's being used in an extremely offensive way then you should just report it and move on.

And just because you can say whatever you want doesn't mean other people should have to see it. The chat filter makes that possible.

Why did you put "people" in quotes? Are they not real people, or something?

If you can't figure it out on your own then me telling you would serve no one's benefit. Take it however you want.

Yeah i realise that, but im saying no one needs to read those things while playing a game, its better to just get rid of that toxic stuff. Like why would anyone want to read hateful/racist things?

Honestly if this is what they want maybe it'd better if they scrap the chat and just have 'quick-chats' like in Rocket League

Just have some pre-picked responses like "ggwp" "close match" and so on.

The lack of transparency about the filter is really worrying. I'm all for censoring racist stuff completely but censoring swearing on its own is kinda silly. I understand why they do it on the forums but in game it's a different thing

So you're gonna blame me for not being able to read your mind? Gotcha.

PS: If you want to read hate speech, just go on any "free speech" website. For some reason, there's a lot of that there.

sometimes a filter detects words inside bigger words, for example finding the word twat in sweetwater.

That's just an example through, I don't expect anyone to use that word much.

And I'm saying that is none of anyone's business but mine. I don't mean to sound hostile when I say this but: who do you think you are to tell me what I should and shouldn't be able to read/see/etc? That is my business not yours, not bhvrs, not my parents, not Biden's, no one's but mine. If you want a filter then that is absolutely your right to have, truly I don't think less of anyone who wants to use one, but just like it's your right to have one it's my right to NOT have one. No one has the right to tell me what I'm allowed to read except me.

Since you agree to play the game under BHVR terms of service.

Do you have selective reading or something? I say one thing and you counter argue with something I'm not even talking about. At no point was I saying I have the right to harass someone, be racist to them, etc. The only thing I ever argued was that it's my right to read what I want. Nothing you just linked said bhvr has the right to determine if I'm allowed to read something or not. It seems like you just want to argue about what people are allowed to say which is NEVER want I was talking about.

My point is that NO ONE should be spouting hateful/racist things for anyone to see, even if you want to.

That I agree with. If anything gets blocked it should be homophobic/racist slurs.

Holy crap guy talk about a toxic and arrogant mind set. I'm sorry if that sounds rude, but there is no nice way to comment on a mind set like that, it's nothing but arrogant and entitled. Have a nice day.

Ngl, I don't mind a pre-built chat filter, but I do think the current one can take it a little far. Imho the current, hard chat filter should only be used for super harsh, racially charged things. I don't think general profanity should fall under that category. (And I've had it happen to me before...)

It's an M rated game, and tbh I think we just need to have a bit more of an active report/ban system for that sort of thing (perhaps similar to the Overwatch system, where they tell you if your reports did something, but not tell you exactly what to at least helo boost morale) along with some sort of 'Good Samaritan' system or something- that way those thumgs up you can give other players will actually mean something.

While that would be amazing, too much work when the official tag line is 'we only work when we feel like it' and it was apparently months of hard work to simply design the new UI when it's basically a standard mobile game UI.

I don't get why they don't just remove chat at this point since most players are on platforms where they don't seem to want to implement chat for whatever reason. Just add generic "good game" messages people can select in post-game and get rid of the chat box.

  • I honestly couldn't care less, just my opinion. I think it's bugged or something is going wrong at the moment based on what kind of words are being censored, but a lot of people didn't bother with chat. Any nice talk with survivors is going through fine, the toxic comments at the end of the game are coming through as hashtags. Overrall I'm happy with it. I've always been against censorship but DBD really does have the worst community I've ever seen. This filter is long overdue.

If I have the chat on seeing a lot of hashtags fly up at the end of the game is a lot better than someone telling me about how I should kill myself or how my family needs to die. Also now I don't need to turn chat off as much so if I get good comments I can see them and they aren't ignored.

I mean, it's not such a big deal, but in my opinion chat filtering wouldn't be a bad thing if it was both optional and if it wasn't one sided to whoever chose which words to censor, i play in south america where 90% of the playerbase is brazilean and they censored not a single brazilean curse word, in fact they also went out of their way to censor anything that can be said against someone from brazil but in portuguese you're allowed to pretty much curse all you want and be xenophobic and homophobic (which surprisingly a huge portion of that brazilean playerbase is, they love throwing racial or xenophobic slurs to everyone from other places).

They should just have a proper report system for the chat and monitor it so if someone's insulting another player they get a time out from being able to use it for a day, then a week, then a month and finally a permanent ban from using chat if they haven't learnt their lesson by then.

Should be an instant permanent ban from using it for slurs or telling someone to kill them selves though because that's never acceptable.

The fact that filter is not working as intended makes it much worse than before filter. Now, when you want to complement someone, it looks like you get pissed.

You say: "Good job Yun-Jin", and it appears like "Good job ######".

I'd like to have an option to turn off filter even if it worked well. I never get offended by any bad words in post game chat. And I actually rarely see someone mad in the end.
