What's the point of rank reset?

I understand how rank reset works, but what is the point of it? Rank reset is presented very matter-of-factly, but I'm not clear of its purpose. Anyone have an idea?

    Without reset every single person could easily get to rank 1 and thus there would be such a massive disparity of skill between the teammates you get in solo q.


    Not that there isn't already but still. It'd be worse.

    Eventually, time and luck will make sure that people will start crawling up to ranks where their skill isn't matched. If you play enough, you'll eventually get to higher and higher ranks, even though you aren't playing very well. Rank reset is a way to make sure that doesn't get out of hand.

    because it's possible to fail your way to rank one given that some killers play by the dumbass rules that some people put forth, ranking up survivors who don't deserve it

    So to keep the matchmaker from being radioactive garbage, they reset so it never gets past being hot garbage

    In addition to what's been said (without it we'd have way too many people permanently stuck in the red ranks)...

    ...It also acts as a way to naturally drop the ranks of people who haven't played the game for a while. If you came back after an extended break, your skills would probably be a little rusty and playing with/against lower ranked players would be a better way to knock the dust off than immediately being thrown to the sharks in Red Ranks.
