Why generators?
I've played this game for a few years now, and I've always wondered the same question. Why are the generators the key to leave the map? It feels so... odd, like if you look at the offerings it feels so old and mystical. Yet, the generators exist bringing in this modern feeling to it, well at least to me it does. This whole realm is so jarring and warped, anything would have been interesting to see, like what if the entirety blocked the way out and the survivors had to find offerings or something to dispell it's power.
I dunno, it feels weird to me haha

It's SUPPOSED to feel 'jarring and warped'. The Entity copies areas in other worlds and mimics them, but it does not know anything about those worlds, so the copies are weird and prone to errors.
It saw generators and felt this would be great to give Survivors false hope, so it used them, without thinking through how or why they would be laying around.

Right. I forgot about the hope aspect that it feeds off of.

Yep! Every escape gives the Survivors hope they will escape back to the real world next time!
And every time they die, the Entity revives them and wipes the memory, so they never recall dying. Thus, they think they escaped and stay hopeful longer.

Well, we have modern maps like Hawkins, Lery's & Gideon Meat Plant
Ontop of other maps like Badham & Gas Heavan which cars & what not. The game was always modern.
So I don't know why you'd single out generators for the modern feeling since we have all these realms that give a modern feeling.
Generators exist to power the exit gates, that's all.
However, I do agree that having modern generators in maps such as Dead Dawg Saloon, grind my gears ever so slightest.

As I said above; the Entity does not understand the worlds it copies. It has 0 idea that the Dead Dawg Saloon existed before generators.
It's supposed to be that way.

Maps were never an issue for me because to me they're just an area. While gens are a mechanic that progresses the game forward... if that makes sense.

I think they're meant to power enough electricity for the exit gates to be activatable.

Yeah that's the point of them, I just meant like.. You're a God of a realm, why would you put these electrical power switches and generators in a realm that you control? Why not make it more customizable, I dunno.

The Entity is quite lazy for an eldritch deity. Oh well, as long as it gets its entertainment.

You know what? That's hard to argue. You make a good point haha

I always supposed it was because all Survivors understand and know what a generator is and would be drawn to fix them fueling their hope, if the Entity put some magical stone that needs prayings maybe some of them wouldnt understand what to do and become hopeless thus starving it, after all when you sign in for the Fog you dont get a tacky training video like you would in fast food megacorporations.

In the original plans, survivors had to repair a car and escape in it. I think it was switched because they wanted you to feel trapped in by something you had to power
