LGBTQ+ Representation
Comments
-
An LGBT+ character isn't going to impact gameplay or take devs away from doing important things like bug fixes and balance updates. Writing "Paul and his boyfriend heard a sound in the garage, Paul said 'I'll be right back' and never returned." is just giving some players representation, that's it. It's also the same thing that has been done to confirm heterosexual relationships in Nurse, Felix, David, and Legion lore - Legion actually did WAY more relationship stuff in their tome lore. If LGBT+ lore bugs you THAT much just don't read the lore - odds are you probably didn't read the lore anyway if you didn't notice all the heterosexual relationships that were already in the game.

You don't understand my point. I am mostly ok with what I am, but when no one you know is in the same situation, you start feeling out of place nevertheless.
Seeing other people you know are the same can really boost your confidence.
I remember when I met a trans girl on Overwatch who was also pansexual. It felt so great to have a friend (even if an e-friend) that is like you.
2 -
But saying that you're "mostly okay" with who you are and that you "feel out of place" and need to see others to "boost your confidence".
That is a little worrisome in my opinion.
Pansexual, Bisexual, Homosexual, whatever, it's more important for us to acknowledge who we are completely without being "mostly okay" about ourselves.
I genuinely feel like you need more reassurance from other people. DBD Forums is not it though...

Yet, we know there are many characters confirmed to be straight. Does it matter what your sexual orientation is when you die? Nah, but it matters for the players who wnat representation. GBK linked a post explaining clearly why representation is so great to have.

If your point is "do not demand representation for the sake of representation", then yes I understand your point. However, just because they've said it's coming, doesn't mean that we shouldn't ask about it. Representation- and I mean valid, good representation, for the record- is incredibly important in media for a multitude of reasons, and so asking companies that produce media for valid representation doesn't seem too horrible, imho. They've said it's coming, and so asking for updates on it really doesn't seem like a demand for representation. Especially when it could be done quite simply, imho, by just changing pronouns ("his ex girlfriend doesn't want to see his face anymore" could easily have become "his ex boyfriend doesn't want to see his face anymore", or just "his ex doesn't want to see his face anymore" to have the exact same effect, and either kept their stance on not confirming either way or confirm a homosexual relationship in canon, for example)

We actually know one was created to be LGBTQ+ in mind but the devs said they don’t want to reveal it to leave it open - while simultaneously including several heterosexual relationships.
also - literally nothing of the lore, backstory, tomes really matter in regards to gameplay. But only if it’s about LGBTQ+ this is used as an argument to exclude it. Having heterosexuality however was included as well as literally any other aspect like hobby’s, family, jobs, dreams etc and no one ever said it shouldn’t have been added because it has nothing to do with the gameplay…

Because it makes the stories more interesting and varied, while showing support and acknowledgement of marginalised players.
The tome lore and all character/setting backstories don't need to exist at all, but everyone on some level accepts that its presence makes the game a little better, at least for some people. If you're going to be telling stories - which DBD is - it's natural for people to want to see themselves represented, and even aside from that it's just more interesting, true to life, and conducive to good storytelling to have representative variety for your characters.

Any place where you interact with people like you makes you feel better. At school, I had a friend who was also pan, and it felt amazing to know you're not alone. While most of my friends know my sexual orientation and are completely accepting (thankfully, as 90% of my country's population publicly declared they are against LGBT), not knowing anyone with your condition can be disheartening.
Same with people that have rare disorders or different conditions. They often like meeting each other. No one, and I repeat, NO ONE, can understand your situation better than someone who faces the same issue.
4 -
Okay, it's good to know that you get my point and I get yours.
But why bother asking them time and time again knowing you've gotten an answer already?
That seems a little too zealous for me and that doesn't look healthy for our community.
We don't need to be their alarm clock, constantly reminding BHVR "in case" they forget that they promised us a gay character. SMH

The only one I was aware of was Felix was going to be a father. Even then he could be Bi.
1 -
asking time and time again, i agree, is excessive. but occasionally asking for updates on it- have they had good talks with gaymerx, is the relevant chapter/tome in production, could we possibly expect to see it soon, etc- really doesn't seem over the top
3 -
heterosexual relationships not heterosexual characters. there is a different, i swear
3 -
Well, I wish the best for your physical and mental health. Know that I support people like you in every way shape and form.
Just because we disagree on one topic, doesn't mean we can't agree on another.

In regards to your last statement. It's been I think 2 years since they said the LGBT character is coming. What exactly takes that long to make? If they spend so much on the lore, then it could be a red flag that their story is just about them being queer, which would just feel forced.
I'd honestly prefer someone that is confirmed to be LGBT and have a bit of story on that, but not have EVERYTHING based on that.
2 -
I propose we just forget about it. It'll be healthier for all of us in the long run.
I'm too busy with real life things than to ponder about the possibilities of an inclusion of a gay character in an indie horror game.
5 -
I would like to think it in a more positive manner.
Maybe they're not just ready yet.
Give it time and forget about it. They never respond to these topics anyway. No good in bickering amongst ourselves.

Of course those mentioned could be bi, or pan or actually gay/lesbian but at that time in their life unsure etc.
but why only include heterosexuality when there are other relationships and stories to be told?
there is BTW Nurse, Oni, Legions Frank and Julie, David and others that have explicitly stated heterosexual relationships, with Legions being on the edge of way too much info..

We all thought the Trickster chapter was going to have an LGBTQ+ character but there’s no actual evidence on what his or Yun-Jin’s sexualities were. It’s kind of disappointing because it would’ve been really cool to have a confirmed LGBTQ+ character in the game.
2 -
Dude so what if they don't care? It's not a bad thing. Tf is the point of having a queer character in the game? The devs said they wouldn't reveal anyone's sexuality so it's stupid to add a gay character. It's stupid just have fun with all the licenses we have. The character being gay won't do anything and what matters is just playing the game
0 -
My worry for this is it will be targeted by killers, that’s the whole reason they removed the bubba cosmetics because players were targeting POC streamers and were really toxic, I fear they’d do the same to anyone who plays the potential lgbt+ character. I feel like people are targeted for having pride charms these days too so I am concerned
0 -
There's a big difference here:
The masks were purposefully equipped and then used to target black and asian streamers. The character, and pride charm, are used voluntarily by the person who the player would target. It is entirely within your control if you wish to wear/use the charm/the survivor. The masks were not.
2 -
To be fair, them just saying they will add such a character but not delivering for over two years is something worth to be pointed out because at this point it seems like they just said it to silence the community. And there are many people that don’t see any mention about it or never even heard about that statement from 2 years ago
3 -
That would've been so out of place though in hindsight.
All-Kill was considered to be brilliantly written not because of Yun-Jin & Trickster's sexuality, but because of their tumultuous relationship. I would've hated to see Yun-Jin or Ji-Woon have a sentence or two with their girlfriend/boyfriend for the sake of hinting they're gay.
5 -
Yeah as GBK said, it’s not entirely the same. And we still have many characters that are PoC after all. Bubba was really a special case and shouldn’t be generalized like that
3 -
good lord
4 -
Asking for more lore won't stop the bug team from doing their job
2 -
They never announced a specific date.
They could introduce a gay character next chapter for all we know. It could be another 2 years from now.
I think we can save our criticisms until they fail to keep their promise when the time comes.
5 -
well… the devs said this while revealing multiple heterosexual relationships and thus at least partly revealed their sexuality. So… you are a little bit too late.
5 -
That really doesn’t make sense I’m sorry. One of them being a part of LGBTQ+ doesn’t negatively impact the story in any way. You really make a big deal out of nothing there.
2 -
Point still stands. Complaining about not having a gay character in a horror game? Who cares?
0 -
Still - new people or those not having heard of the statement are still free to request it. Also, I think criticism shouldn’t just be held back to please some people that supposedly don’t care? They could just act like that and don’t care and let other people request what they want.
at this point they have failed their promise in the eyes of some people. That’s of course subjective and you (and I) don’t agree - but it’s not like our opinion here is the one and only truth.
3 -
It has nothing to do with each of the characters, that's what I'm pointing out.
Felix's girlfriend + baby at least gives Felix agency and a motivation to fight for his life in the realm.
Yun-Jin is literally there to have revenge on the Trickster and he's there to satisfy is thirst for blood.
Having a cheap line for the sake of appeasing the LGBT community would've been so out of place, just sayin'.
0 -
i care. And many others do too. You think your opinion is the only one that matters?
Also: point still stands - if you don’t care, why even click on this thread to begin with?
4 -
True.
No point in arguing about BHVR's ineptitude in delivering promises.
0 -
I'm by no means against it. I just feel it should happen organically rather than as a box to be checked off.
0 -
I hate the people with the mentality of "I don't care so no one gives a #########" – no, you're wrong. As far as this thread has been going, most people agree we need representation.
As long as we have many characters confirmed to he straight, there is no reason not to at least mention someone is part of LGBT (and I see people mentioning gay a lot – why not have a bisexual/pansexual/gay MTF or FTM? That would pretty much be a cool way to go around things, a character represents both the gender and orientation related communities)
1 -
How would it happen "organically" in your view? The inclusion of a (playable) queer character is not going to go unnoticed, regardless of whether it's advertised or not.
1 -
the good news is bhvr came to the decision organically so now we just sit and wait and wait
4 -
On the other hand - isn’t that kinda one-dimensional to have only this one thing about Yun-Jin? Something personal other than her relation to the Trickster and wish for revenge wouldn’t hurt and actually help in story telling. Not saying it should have been her - but having a char be LGBTQ+ and mention it while telling a different story isn’t the worst.
we have for example David and the mentioning of his girlfriend - as far as I remember that was completely unnecessary and no one had a problem with it? Could have been just mentioned as a partner instead of a girlfriend as well. But being more explicit makes it way more natural and believable.
1 -
Does it affect you? Will it hurt not having it? Plus you'll get tunneled almost every game
0 -
this you?
clearly thats something youre passionate about and care about that has no impact on the gameplay itself; this is much the same.
4 -
You don't need it my guy it's not necessary lol it's just a gay fictional character that will get you tunneled
0 -
Lol, that's just bad writing.
I just think regardless of one's sexuality, a story needs to focus on the main subject of the story which is: why and what happened before they came to the realm. If they are able to incorporate the two into one, that would be the perfect inclusion of a gay character in DBD.
Comparing Felix and David's stories, I can clearly tell one was given a lot of thought and the other was just made on the spot.
5 -
Nope its not the same as giving licenses a silly skin than adding a pointless gay character lol. Like congrats the survivors is gay, now what? 😂😂😂
0 -
the exclusion of a marginalized group affects me. Yeah. It kinda hurts not having it and treating LGBTQ+ explicitly different compared to heterosexuality.
the argument of getting tunneled is stupid - we already have people that tunnel for any kind of ‚reason’ (people of color, only female characters, etc). That’s a very weak argument against inclusion.
3 -
That's what we call "representation". Do some reading and educate yourself as to why it's important instead of being antagonistic and having a meltdown at the thought of a gay character <3
9 -
I would say that is a very subjective opinion and there will be people prefer the story that you say has bad writing. and still no reason to be exclusive as you can write a story like Felix‘s with an LGBTQ+ char. Actually would have been way better to have Felix be gay and a father-to-be.
3 -
Tf? It's just a gay character bro. It shouldn't hurt bruh it's just pointless
0 -
As much as I don't want to attack anyone on the forum, your statements just proved to me that you are a clown and it's not worth paying attention to any of your posts.
As long as a marginalized and still hated group being excluded is less important for you than a skin being stilly, you lose any credibility.
5 -
If a gay character is pointless why do you care? It doesn't matter to you (making this assumption because you said it's pointless). But it matters to other people. Also this ⬇️
