How/why did DBD lose the Stranger Things license?

Just curious. I checked Steam DBD news and saw that the Stranger Things chapter will be disappearing for good in November.

Just wondering what caused BHVR to lose the license of Stranger Things.

I know Hawkins Lab will be disabled for good, but I loved the map. Will it be reskinned and perhaps slightly edited so it can remain in the game, even if slightly different?

Why does no one else seem to be talking about this?

There's a lot of talk about it everywhere.

Nobody knows anything rn other than the map is leaving, the characters and cosmetics are staying as exclusives, and the perks will be reworked and added to the shrine for anyone that doesn't have the characters already.

Well, it was the most heated topic a couple of days ago. You are just late for the chaos and pandemonium.

BHVR hasn't given us a clear answer in the matter so most of the possibilities are merely conjectures, darting from Netflix wanting to do their own videogame based in Stranger Things to the raise of the license because of the arrival of the new series. The only truth is the agreement is over and the characters are becoming Legacy.

The map will be disabled permanently. There is no going to be a repurpose or reskin of it. This is something the moderators have amply explained. Sadly. It was a good and interesting map and I'm sad to see it go.

It was talked about amply before you made this thread. For most of us, this isn't breaking news; we've known for nearly two days by now, at least.

BHVR most likely had a contract that expires toward the end of the year, and, given Netflix is known for fancy licences and costly investments, it wouldn't be far-fetched to suggest that the short license BHVR had on Stranger Things was just beginning to feed on their profits (not directly, of course, that's insane, just that it was getting too expensive). Perhaps even more likely considering that, the upcoming Stranger Things Season 4 had Netflix asking for more for a licence renewal on BHVR's end.

Or maybe Netflix agencies no longer wish to uphold a contract with BHVR, or don't want future or existing content implemented anymore.

Either way, if you have the characters, you keep them, so the only thing we're truly losing is Hawkins and possible perk changes in the future. Maybe.

People were talking about it all day yesterday (myself included) which is when the news broke. The only reason it's not the main story is because Pinhead was released today. Some have theorized that the timing of the announcement wasn't a coincidence.

Anyway no one knows for sure why the license is expiring, the team has given only a vague statement on the subject. The general understanding is that it's simply a contractual agreement coming to a close, the license perhaps coming up for renewal and not being picked back up (quite possibly due to a decision by Netflix). My belief, though this is only speculation, is that the map is the only thing that's being pulled because it's the only piece of Stranger Things content that was given to all players for free.

The paid content (characters and cosmetics) will be on sale at half price starting today or tomorrow depending on time zones. I think the statement was that they will remain on sale until November, when they will be permanently removed from the store. Anyone who owns them before that time will keep them, anyone who doesn't won't be able to get them. There's no reason why the team can't redesign the map structure with a different aesthetic and textures to remove all references to Stranger Things (which I myself would like, as Hawkins is one of my top favorite maps in the game) and they may do so, but they haven't said whether that's something that they're considering. Yesterday there were entire celebration threads about the removal of the map, so don't be surprised if someone reminds you that they hate it and are glad that game content that other people enjoy is being taken away.

  • Personally i think it could be three reasons ;

    1. Netflix is making their own stranger things game and does not want The Stranger Things Chapter to overshadow it
    2. Netflix does not want BHVR to sell the stranger things chapter anymore because the contents are outdated. (They are mostly from Season 1 and 2)
    3. The license was too expensive.

That is unfortunate honestly. Hopefully we can get another indoor map in place of Hawkins.

I know lots of people don't enjoy the indoor maps but I love them because it ups the horror feel since every corner carries a sense of unknown with it. Tight corners, limited environmental vision, etc.

Yeah I guess I'm late. It's unfortunate though.

I feel BHVR needs to start focusing more on maps than characters anyway. There are not enough maps to keep the game always refreshing. Especially now since we are losing a map BHVR should at the very least revisit a past original chapter to add maps such as Trickster's or The Blight's or The Twins

I love the Hawkins map dearly. It might actually be my favorite in the game. I love it equally as survivor and killer (it's a tremendous map for Doctor, my favorite killer). The combination of tight turns, narrow corridors, wide "middle rooms", twists and turns around the stairwells and a single corridor second floor made the map really unique. It was a maze without the massive sprawl of RPD or even Lery's which a lot of people seem to hate. It was really unpredictable and dyamic, not a lot of places to creep around and hide. You're almost always running into someone on that map.

I'm with you, I really hope that they release a modified version of it somewhere down the line. We have 22 Macmillans, Coldwinds, Autohavens, Badhams and swamps. We only have one Hawkins.

People suspect it's netflix. That's probable due to the upcoming platform but it's unreasonable if the stranger things game is not a hide n seek thriller.

It's also likely that BHVRs mismanagement is finally manifesting in new and unprecedented ways. Other license could (but likely won't) follow suit.

I heard yesterday (not dbd-related) that netflix plans their own gaming service, with games based of their ip´s.

So maybe if they want the stranger things to be exclusive to them, it makes sense to pull it from dbd.

Most likely due to the rumored game Netflix is trying to make.

They want a monopoly over the characters methinks, so they pulled the license away so no other games offer nancy, steve & Demogorgon.

Your guess is as good as anyone else's. We were never told the reason why so all we can do is speculate.

No. They’ll be unobtainable, therefore becoming “legacy” items themselves. Same with Demo.

Same goes for all their existing skins.

We're also not allowed to know from Bhvr at the moment due to legal reasons. But, it's Netflix's IP so they can say whatever they want, Bhvr just can't.
