What is winning?

So with MMR rapidly approaching, I feel the need to bring this issue up once again and ask for both the community and the devs to answer... How can I tell if I've won as Killer or Survivor? As things are now, I (and likely many others) are quite confused as to what constitutes as winning on either side.

Do I win if I run the killer around the whole game, but die to save another teammate and let them out? Do I win if I've gotten two players killed and two escape when they haven't been hooked due to their superior skill? Do I win if I get a 4k too quickly due to survivors that I'm facing making too many mistakes? Do I win if hide all game and escape through hatch?

With all these questions in mind, I'm not even sure HOW to win on either side or if what I do is even meaningful relative to the trial at the moment. Sure I'm glad I had fun, but there are those serious downer moments when I get a rank down despite feeling that I was playing rather well. Sure, everyone makes their own win conditions at this point, but how am I supposed to tell if I've done well at my objective when getting a 4k too quickly or running the killer around all game only to die saving someone else results in a rank down or at best a safety?
