Remember when people said Blight would be a weak killer

This is the most with time thing I’ve ever seen. I was scrolling through comments of old Blight release videos and here is a quote. “I am astounded by this design like hey, remember that COOL Halloween lore and #########? Hey look here’s a killer that’s directly based off of it. The power? Oh it’s a faster legion that bumps into walls and can’t hit unless he bumps into them and the reward for this painful power of bumping into clunky hitboxes and somehow making use of the strange speed? Yeah a single health state. This killer is disappointing in so many levels”. Or “This looks bad. The design is so cool and they had so many ways to give him a cool power but they went with “rush”? This just doesn’t look powerful or fun”.

Now Blight is a community favorite killer who is 99.9% of the time in S tier. And a power said to be very enjoyable most of the time. With a few nerf posts here and there. There were small changes here and there, but nothing that really changed the gameplay of Blight. I feel this could happen with Pinhead also. Or with future killers. That’s why patience is needed

People didn’t know how to utilize him at first and he was super janky before. Now that people understand the depth of him, he’s very strong in the right hands.

This also happened with Twins when they released. And it's probably about to happen with Pinhead.

I think all this talk about Blight making it a top 3 is over-hype created by content creators

i thought he was cool. i was kinda hyped. still not gonna say he's S tier though.

I remember those were fun times pub stomping with blight until people realized blight was strong

I still am disappointed that the alchemist we had hyped up for years wound up being Blight. I think mechanically he’s well designed and is very fun to play as and against (barring full meta build Blight), but I’d be lying if I said I was fully ok with him being the end result of all that teasing. Love the power, wish we’d have had a more scientific killer for the alchemist. As is Clown and Doctor remain the two most scientifically gifted…

It's almost as if a good chunk of the community will declare every new mechanic that isn't 'press button to win' and isn't holding their hand 'bad, boring and unfun'

Remember when people said Nurse is officially dead when she got a Nerf but it only proved who are the real Nurse chads and the Noob nurse mains.

Also people saying Pinhead is weak but people figuring out his hoarder/franklin is just nasty.

I do not understand this meme about blight at all. He received several massive changes from the PTB/day one drop including

    • considerably better collision logic. Previously he would bounce off literal door frames or the air near geometric objects.
    • base power breaking pallets
    • Field of view height change from significantly lower to higher

The only nerfs he has gotten has been to his stupid DPI flicking exploit, otherwise he has gotten considerable buffs from day one on. It was not that 'people slept on blight'. He was pretty terrible on the PTB/release.

Who is saying pinhead is weak? He seems like a potential A-tier killer. He just has a high skill cap.

To be fair, people say that of every Killer at their release...

I remember thinking "Wow, a killer that can bounce off walls, the devs really are out of ideas". How bloody wrong was I.

  • Uistreel
    Uistreel Member Posts: 634

People said blight was going to be a weak killer, because he was going to be a weak killer, based of the ptb. Then they changed him.

His original POV was awful, it felt damn near impossible to track survivors. The low camera angle and his awful controls on console made me hate playing as him. I mean that. I hated him. The devs raised his camera and tweaked his controls. Those weren't small changes, at least not for console. It made a huge improvement in his playability.

If the community hadn't been vocal about how much his low camera sucked or how bad the controls felt, then the devs might not have fixed him and he could still be miserable to play as today.

You need to remember when blight got release he was sliding on structure the colision was bad and the FoV was awful. The dev fix all that so now he took his spot as one of the top 3 killer in dbd personally i still think he required more skill then nurse but the reward is less then nurse.

    Brokenbones Member Posts: 5,169

I think his FOV being messed up made him really hard to play

You couldn't see over most of the loops in most maps, which is obviously important

So you were watching old videos of Blight's release?

Blight was ######### terrible on release. Why don't we roll back all the changes and fixes they've made for him and see if you still think he's a strong killer.

  • MadLordJack
    MadLordJack Member Posts: 8,814

Ugh, I was so hated by the community for saying that he was really, really good. And now there's this huge undercurrent of people wanting desperately to not have been wrong that claim he was buffed into his current state. Except he really wasn't, I mained Blight through all of his iterations and he's pretty much always been the same, j-flick notwithstanding.

  • AGM
    AGM Member Posts: 806

I could possibly understand Hag. But I can't really see any other killers besides Nurse, Spirit, Blight, and Hag able to hold their own against 4 skilled survivors.

Of course every game is different, no killers are unusable, this is just my opinion, blah blah blah. But which killers would you give the #3 and #4 spot to?

  • konchok
konchok Member, Alpha Surveyor Posts: 1,719

This is bullshit, he was strong since launch. I know I was, and many other blights were dominating with him early on, even before his height was adjusted and his hit boxes were even more jank.

  • C3Tooth
    C3Tooth Member Posts: 8,266

I believed because his POV was too low that not even able to see short height loops. Combined with the thought of you can only dash straight. But now hes able to J flick, so yes. Every killer can be strong if they buff them enough, no matter the power.

  • MadLordJack
    MadLordJack Member Posts: 8,814

I feel like something like that should have happened for me and The Twins, but I just cannot bring myself to consider them genuinely good, knowing what I do about their counterplay.

  • GeneralV
    GeneralV Member Posts: 11,218

Same. I don't think Twins are as strong as most people say they are.

  • Bwsted
    Bwsted Member Posts: 3,452

They were talking about ptb blight and they weren't wrong. His original collision box was too large and got caught on everything. Also, originally nobody knew about exploits to bypass the turn rate cap.

  • baseballfan4877
    baseballfan4877 Member Posts: 364

It's nice to be patient/hopeful for newly released killers, but people said blight was bad when he actually was bad/annoying (in ptb mainly), not because people needed to learn him first. The major buff he got was the POV change. Bouncing is still a little wonky, but way better than it was in ptb. Also patience goes both ways. People learn how to play pinhead or whoever, but at the same time people learn how to play AGAINST them. I personally don't think Pinhead is that bad atm, but there are some changes that would help with consistency. Chains shouldn't break on environment or walking through them as pinhead. Personally i think those are the only changes he needs.

  • MadLordJack
    MadLordJack Member Posts: 8,814

Most of what you are talking about is purely PTB. When a killer is released, it is irrelevant.

Him being low wasn't as much of a detriment as people pretend, him not breaking pallets or walls was a complete and utter non-issue because HE IS BLIGHT and could absolutely be removed without any real impact, and here's a secret that I'm sick of sitting on: He was perfectly playable on console with a custom controller like the Xbox Elite one, because his only major issue was the turn curve was misimplimented.

  • Warcrafter4
    Warcrafter4 Member Posts: 2,917

Most of those were from live versions of the game. For example blight's rush being able break pallets was added in 4.2.2. He was released in 4.2

    He left the PTB limping.

  • Pulsar
    Pulsar Member Posts: 20,783

Yeah, most of those were live on release.

Also, Elite controllers cost $240 new and $160 USED.

I'm not buying a 200 USD controller for ANY game.

  • Impose
    Impose Member Posts: 400

    No. I don't

  • MadLordJack
    MadLordJack Member Posts: 8,814

No, he didn't. The only things they added were his ability to break pallets (completely worthless, btw), his camera height (which was another QoL thing, same as the pallets) and his turning rate (to fix the controller issue and prevent J-flicks). They also changed his bump a few times, but none of them were any better than the last iteration (all they did was change how the collision worked, none of them improved it) so they've finally given up.

Blight was a completely different and much worse character on the PTB. But the PTB is completely irrelevant, because it's not DbD and it shouldn't shape opinions unless the killer was literally not changed.

  • ReikoMori
    ReikoMori Member Posts: 3,333

On paper and during ptb he felt bad to play. It took a while for people to get used to the concept and then it took a while longer for the various bugs and issues to be somewhat fixed enough that playing him wasn't an extreme hassle. Most opinions related to dbd age poorly. People thought Legion was a strong killer, but after the bugfixes started coming in and people had more time against them and playing as them they found out Legion was fairly weak. Infinitely annoying to survivors, but weak overall.

Long story short: Time makes fools and cowards of us all.

  • Zozzy
    Zozzy Member Posts: 4,759

    then they buffed him.

  • JacksonWise
    JacksonWise Member Posts: 651

I'm glad someone pointed this out. People saying Pinhead is weak right now are nuts. He has some of the best 4v1 in the game.. I guarantee you players will start saying, "Chain Hunt OP Plz nerf" very soon.

  • SirCracken
    SirCracken Member Posts: 1,414

    ^^^ This!

I also mained the hell out of Blight since his release. He really was always this good. Even before the POV changes. Anyone one else claiming that he was terrible dismissed him and didn't properly understand him.

  • Pulsar
    Pulsar Member Posts: 20,783

I tried to main him but he really was bad for a bit post-launch.

And then he didn't get fixed for a huge portion of the playerbase until 8 months later

  • MadLordJack
    MadLordJack Member Posts: 8,814

I literally just looked up the patch notes, too, just to make sure I wasn't crazy. We're not, he had nearly every issue patched out on release.

  • SirCracken
    SirCracken Member Posts: 1,414

I can't say I agree. I have vivid memories of me during my first dozen Blight games absolutely destroying survivors and deliberately letting them heal and regroup just so I can chase them more, it was so much fun! They weren't potatoes either. If I didn't keep getting downs my games would have been over quickly.

  • JustWhimsical
    JustWhimsical Member Posts: 590

As a console player I can refute this completely lol, he was awful to play on console for so long there was a reason why only PC players really used him. It may have been easier for you, but for the majority of people, he just felt awful until he was fixed.

  • Tsulan
    Tsulan Member Posts: 15,095

Yeah, let's just forget about all the changes he received since then. Like fixing part of his bump issues, where he bumped into thin air. Or his POV that was positioned at his ankles. Or his ultra sensitive turning rate...

Any killer can be changed from trash tier (Wraith) into top tier and vice versa (Billy).

Console blight player on launch, his power was piss easy to dodge and as I don’t think I said he was terrible, I only said he had several issues on launch that were later flattened out, no reason for the aggression
