Mend against deathslinger?

Can someone please explain to me why sometimes I have to mend after deathslinger shoots me and sometimes I don’t?

    If the chain breaks or deathslinger breaks his chain and connects the hit against you while you are healthy you gain deep wounds.

    If deathslinger breaks the chain himself and doesn't connect the hit with you, you take no damage.

    Slinger's shots cause the deep wounds state when he either hits you or makes you snap the chain.

    Slinger doesn't cause deep wounds if he doesn't hit you with his lunge. This also means you don't get the speed boost.

    If he shoots you and then misses his lunge, you don't have to mend. If he hits you, or the chain breaks, you have to mend.
