Totem Rework Idea
So with the introduction of the boon totems and looking at how they work, it got me thinking about how totems could be reworked so that hex totems don't get cast aside.
As it stands, I don't think that the boon totems are too OP yet, but I have a feeling that they won't stay like that forever. The devs have a habit of buffing survivor aspects if they underperform. However, the boon totems do pose a bit of a problem for hex totems.
For those who haven't seen how they work in the ptb, here's a brief rundown.
Any totem in the trial can be blessed by a survivor who has equipped a boon totem perk and the totem lights up blue and applies the effect. This can happen to any totem whether dull or hex. A killer can snuff out the boon totem and remove its effects, but this is where it gets tricky.
A snuffed out boon totem becomes a dull totem and remains standing. So the survivor can just re-bless the totem over and over again. This poses a problem because it makes it so that only a survivor has the power to fully eliminate a totem. What makes it more complicated, is that if a hex totem gets a boon added to it and then a killer snuffs it out, the totem still becomes dull and the hex is removed.
This creates an imbalance because survivors can keep getting their totems blessed but killers can't reapply a hex. At first, I thought that the best solution would be to make it so that when a killer snuffs out a totem, it gets destroyed much like if a survivor cleanses a totem. This means that the totem is gone and the survivor will have to find a new totem to bless instead of the same one over and over. This, however, didn't seem like a solid solution though, just a small fix. Then I thought of a full totem rework.
Here's my idea.
All five totems begin in the trial as cursed. The cleansing action removes the curse and turns the totem into a dull totem. Survivors can apply boon blessings to dull or hexed totems and can do this indefinitely as totems will no longer break. Killers, in turn, can reapply their hex to a dull totem much like survivors can. If a killer snuffs out a boon, a totem becomes dull.
This idea got me really amped and got me thinking about how much more fun totems can be for both survivor and killer.
Being able to reapply a hex will be risk/reward for killer because they'll waste time looking for a dull totem to curse, but then they'll get their ruin, lullaby etc back. On the other hand, totems will be easier for survivors to find if they are always lit up and crackling, making inner strength plays easier without a map etc.
I'd love to hear your constructive thoughts on this idea. I doubt it'll ever happen, but I think it's a decent idea.
