What is Chapter 22?
I wanted to do a fun thread of looking into specifics on who and what Ch. 22 really is, discussing theories like who the characters are, where the map may be (if there is one), powers and perks, etc.
Also... while there might be some rumors or leaks floating around, I'm going to do my best not to draw theories or evidence from them. This is strictly from speculation and teasers provided by BHVR.
So first things first- the teaser we got yesterday is a link to the fictional Fresno Memorial Center of Arts and Culture. We know its fictional because 1. There's no building or group like that in Fresno, and 2. if you look at the link its a section of DBD's website. But there's also something else interesting about the link:
As you can probably see at the end of it, its clearly marked as a content teaser. Even more juicy is the term Portrait of a Murder- I'm inclined to think this is the name of the Chapter. More on this later, but it's consistent with an artist (C. Mora) being one of the characters. People are arguing whether Mora is the Survivor or Killer, mostly because they were famous in the 1970's and all our Survivors are from the present. Honestly I think it could go either way, we need more information before we make a better guess. The bio and description of the art isn't very helpful either, only talking about the mystery of the person and some themes of political revolution in Chile (another trait for C. Mora).
Next we look at the artworks themselves- so far there's just the first and third that's been revealed, an obelisk/tower with black tendrils (Twitter) and a crow with an eye insignia (thanks to a Facebook link). I'm no architecture buff, but the tower looks like an obelisk to me- right shape only missing the capstone, with some markings and features that could be religious or ceremonial in nature. If the previous Tomes have any hints towards future Chapters we could think of this as a continuation of the Black Vale, the cult that worships the Entity. An obelisk of theirs being surrounded by Entity tendrils seems like a fair description of the first picture. The crow is also consistent with the Entity, but even more so here seeing as the title is Portrait of a Murder, not Murderer (A group of crows is called a murder).
What's also fun is that crows are a pretty universal bird that can be found on nearly every continent except two- Antarctica (obviously) and South America. Why link Chile and crows together? Because one of the characters is linked to crows, most likely the Killer if they are a member of the Black Vale. But at this point the speculation goes to far, so lets go back to the website sources.
If you click on any link of the fake website, you get an unknown error and the following strand of numbers.
8, 25, 19, 44, 1; -20.37, -69.85; 13, 2, 26, 11, 1
Thanks to people much smarter than me, some of these numbers were deciphered. (-20.37, -69.85) is a set of coordinates that link up to Pozo Almonte, Chile. Specifically, the coordinates are of an old saltpeter mine called Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter works, located in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The place is pretty cool, an old mining town/facility abandoned by time in the middle of the Chilean desert- a great idea for a map, if not a bigger version of Ironworks of Misery. The other numbers are a bit more confusing- people think that the first set (8,25,19,44,1) are a date, but the only significance I could find of Chile in 8/25/1944 is the birth of a football player. People note that Chile's worst avalanche happened on 8/8/1944, but I don't know where the date comes from, plus avalanches don't happen in deserts.
Finally, what could these numbers mean Mason? More dates or possibly tide tables? Could the architecture be related to the Incas in anyway, which were a huge presence in modern Chile? What popular Chilean myths could inspire the Chapter, or is it just a red herring and only flavor text for the Survivor?
I'll be updating this thread with every new teaser (Probably daily until Friday when the teaser trailer drops), so I'll update my info as follows as well.
EDIT 1:
So that was quick- I guess we're getting daily pics at 8am PST until the trailer on Friday.
It's worth noting each picture has a different name when saved- the tower was tower, this is called nest. Another bird related name, the Killer will definitely have something to do with birds or crows (I think?). This is also a bit of a disturbing image to look at- maybe a depiction of the Entity and its tendrils? The few things I do recognize and charms or keys hanging by threads, so that helps slightly with the cult theory. I guess we'll have to see what Day 4's picture will bring- many people see a face or head, so it could be a portrait of our Killer/Survivor?
