Should boons be removed from the game?

I still feel weird about boon totems, as someone who plays both killer and survivor.

As killer, I have the same problems as anyone else. (Boons aren't really an issue if one or two survivors bring them, but when the whole team brings them, well...)

As survivor, I find the whole idea of boon perks...kind of silly.

One thing I enjoy about playing survivor is the suspense. (That's why I actually like the unpredictability of playing solo survivor. Obviously I want to escape the trial alive, but I like how there's less a guarantee of survival. It makes winning feel more rewarding.) I also think survivors relying on simple tools and perks based on physical strength/perception adds a (thin) layer of realism to the game.

The idea of blessing totems, using magic to survive, just doesn't sit right with me. It defeats some of the essentials that make DBD work.

What do you guys think?

Just want to mention for the last option "No, but killers should be able to destroy boon totems" would practically make boon perks useless.

As for choosing no, I think they're unique and the two we currently have arent too broken but good perks that split the meta a bit more and keep survivors off gens for longer. I do however think the new one that's on its way could be controversial if not changed.

  • Yeah, I agree with you about the last option, lol, but I added it to see how many people thought this.

    Good points.

I don't think boons should be permanently destroyed but they should have a massive 2-3 minute cooldown when broken.

Or its charge based where you can only reignite equal to the number of boons you have equipped. With this idea in mind all of them keep all effects regardless of remaining charges.

I don't agree with completely removing them, but they should have a limit (with tokens, maybe). It's worth nothing tho, even if Boons provide notorious advantages to survivors, that still means that they have to spend time finding and lighting up a totem, and that's time they're choosing to not spend working on a gen.

Plus, Killers can easily find Boons via sound and deactivate them in just a second. So, to me they're not a mistake or something that shouldn't have been in the game (I still think there should be a limit of sorts). Last matches I've played against teams with Boons, gens didn't fly, and I wasn't using Ruin nor Pop. Guess why.

They should not be removed, but they should be toned down a bit (say, 75% max for CoH, just as a rough example)

They shouldn't be removed, but they need some changes. Killers breaking totems is one way to do it but I think there are other ways to go about it as well.

    "but"?

    killers can.

I think it should probably either be easier to find them (maybe aura reading while within the sound bubble for those with hearing issues? at the very least, maybe make the sound more directional.), and/or they should have a cooldown/requirement (maybe you have to cleanse a totem before you can bless one? or maybe do something related to the totem effect? eg, heal before you can use coh, hide within 10m of the killer for 30/20/10s before shadow step, heal someone from the downed state before exponential, etc)

They need some adjustments, but they don't need to be completely removed from the game.

I never think any perk or character should ever be removed from the game because it's too strong or weak or annoying. It just needs to be changed to something that doesn't make the game miserable and feel completely 1 sided (even if it is completely one sided, although I don't think dbd is as one sided as people like to say it is).

No, the Boon system is in general fine the way it is, they just need to adjust the individual boon effects (i.e. adjust the healing speed of Circle of Healing, and maybe the radius of Shadowstep and Exponential (depending on whether or not the devs think those last two are actually overpowered.)

  • You all made great points. Thanks for your insights, friends.

"Nerfing" boons is probably the most reasonable way to go.

For the record, I think them being outright destroyed is a bad idea. However, adding a significant cooldown is something I would absolutely be in favour of.

I really think that the impermanence of Boon Totems should be much more developed than it is. Although I don't think they should be able to be broken (face it: Boon: Totems just aren't balanced the same way Hex: Totems are, and if they were I would expect MANY more changes to come to them than just being able to be broken. I'm talking map-wide effects. If you think Boons should be treated like hex's than you think they should be treated like Hex's. Really let that sink in on what that means.)

Boons should be much, MUCH easier for killers to find than they are. I think the audio cue needs to be raised up in volume to be more prominently heard so that it's clearly obvious where it is. Unlike Hex totems Boons aren't meant to be this big secret presence on the map, Survivors know where they are and equally Killers should be given some fairly blatant clues and hints to where they are, not soft chimes, I'm talking regular sounding chimes, like Johnny Windchimes.

This way Boon Totems require much more dedicated attention to them. Ideally you'd get maybe 2 maybe 3 uses out of a Boon before the killer finds it and snuffs it out, and then starts this game of cat and mouse where the survivor needs to take time and bounce around trying to find a new place to put it and the killer always finding it within a reasonable amount of time and snuffing it out again.

The permanent Boon totem in a corner of the map I feel is more problematic. I get that it takes time for survivors to get to that part of the map, receive their buff, get back to the parts of the map that matter, but the sheer consistent sustain you get from this I think is well worth the time in most situations. That's where Boons become a greater issue to deal with because it kind of stonewalls and hopes a killer has of snowballing pressure.

For those situations maybe the Boons aura is highlighted to the killer for a brief time (say 5 seconds) after a certain length of time has passed and a Boon has been attached to a specific totem for some time. After that the highlight will routinely appear at fixed intervals, say every 30 seconds or so. This gives the killer information they need about where it is Survivors have been going, and provides them a clear option to go there and snuff it out really quickly if they have the time.

Perhaps even better, after a Boon totem has been highlighted one time, any time a Boon is highlighted again the killer will be given the ability to snuff the boon out from a distance at increased ranges for every fixed interval that passes but only when it is highlighted. So the first time it's highlighted you're only seeing the aura, the 2nd time the highlighted boon appears killers can snuff it out at a distance of 16m, then 24m, 36m, 48, 56, 64, etc. so on and so forth. Again, this option is only given for that small window of time that a Boon's aura is highlighted to the killer (2 - 5 seconds, doesn't really matter just can't be too long, and of course can't be too short, must be realistically noticeable).

It would be cool to see a way to break dull totems, though I believe Hex: Pentimento works that way.
