Crows that are like regular crows...but DIRE.
Seriously though, it's a trope from older RPG games, where it referred to an animal that was bigger and more powerful than normal. It may have come from the original Dungeons and Dragons now that I think about it.

"Dire" in this context means that the animal is bigger and more ferocious than its regular counterpart, with the main example being Dire Wolves.
Fun fact! Dire Wolves were actually a real thing, but they're extinct now.

"Dire" is essentially a semi-fantasy suffix that is used to imply the animal is bigger, stronger, and more dangerous than its normal counterpart. It has had real world usage, but its primarily used in fantasy nowadays.
Her "Dire Crows" are pretty huge, hence the namesake.

Dire Wolves were a real animal that is now extinct. They got the name in 1858.

Everything said so far is true. Dire Animals are more ferocious, stronger and dangerous, then their normal counterparts. In the context of the DnD game I think, that Dire Animals are supposed to be more "wild" and "primal", ie like the original stock of that animal, whose diluted bloodline has become the "normal" version. So Dire Animals are often the leader of a pack or the leading pack within a certain region.

I was surprised when I learned it too, it's a neat little fact. I'd always assumed they were fictional.

here, this should clear it up.

Definitely.
Another good example - my rear becomes a 'dire rear' after eating too many chili peppers.

If you're trying to use dire properly, think of it as an animal in dire straights. A starving beast, that NEEDS to kill you or it's going to die itself. It's going to put everything it has into taking you down. That's why it's used the way it is.
Dire itself just 'very urgent' or 'very serious'.
So in this context a very desperate artist with her arms removed manifest itself with crows that NEED to slaughter you to satisfy the Entity. She's in a haze and panic and MUST kill you. That's what's going on.
