Escape and collect a new item?

So I got this for my daily ritual, the killer was nice when I was the last survivor left and let me escape. I dropped my medkit to thank them. On my way to find the hatch, I picked up a toolbox one of my fellow survivors had dropped. Killer closed hatch and let me escape through the gate. I did not get credit for completing the ritual. What am I missing? Does it have to be an item from a chest?

Seems like. There's another achievement for getting an item someone else brought in, but since it didn't register I imagine it's fresh-map items only.
