For me it’s usually an hour on xbox one.

Depends on the size of the game and the speed of the internet connection that you have.
If you want your PS4 to download faster, use a wired connection if you're using Wi-Fi. Close all background applications don't play anything until it's done.
For me a DBD update is usually about 10 mins to download but, the copying part takes longer.

The last patch was about 26gigs for my Xbox1x, and took just over 40 minutes.

My ps4 I got sometime in 2014 and it doesn't take that long for for DBD patches - maybe 30 minutes at most and that's mostly the "copying" not the actual downloading of the patch. I'm plugged in for internet and my internet provider is decent - also helps if our service for some reason isn't running up to par my husband will call them and tell them to fix it.
If you are using wifi that can cause it to take longer. Also if you don't have a good internet provider - my sister used to have a terrible one and we couldn't believe how ridiculously long it would take my nephews ps4 to download updates from games, she switched to a new one and now his updates are much faster.

Around half an hour? I just know it never takes hours to download

Put your PS4 in rest mode to download faster. Make sure you allow updates while in rest mode. Even just having the console on will make it take longer because it has to load all those ads and your friends information, etc

It depends on the size of the update and your internet connection speed.

It's gonna depend more on your ISP's download speed more than the console itself. The bigger the game the more time it takes, but 8-9hours sounds more like you're getting a really low or throttled download speed from your ISP. Another thing to keep in mind is if you're using wifi or ethernet cable. You will get substantially faster downloads and uploads with a hardline than you will wifi even if you're right next to the router.
I can get a big game downloaded and installed in about an hour/hour and half if it is like 50+gigs, but I know I have mostly uncapped data spd from my ISP currently.
