Tried to be new player today... Holy ####!
Today I was wondering how it's like to be new player, so I installed the free copy I got from Epic giveaway. First match was real potatoes, as expected, but... the second match... Holy crrrraaap! Coordinated SWF with all purple perks... OMG, if that is what killers supposed to experience on their second match ever, than no wonder people don't want to play it. Where is my supposed SBMM? Has it shot so far up after a single match? Or is it completely not working? Going to try first survivor game now...
Survivor perks (all level 3) No way these are newbies! Or do people derank that far?
1: Lithe, Self Care, Quick and quiet, Iron Will
2: Soul Guard, Unbreakable, Flip Flop, Boil Over
3: Balanced Landing, DS, Boon: Exponential, BT
4: Self Care, Iron Will, DH, Kindred
Me: Trapper with Brutal Strength and no addons.
Result: 4k

What happens is someone with high MMR sees the 4 man SWF and dodges the lobby because who can blame then. After a killer leaves a lobby the game will put ANY MMR into that lobby so the SWF doesn't have to wait. This includes killers who might literally be playing their first match ever. Also congrats on the 4k, a good killer can easily kill non sweaty SWFs even without perks. Just because they have all level 3 perks doesn't mean they are good. I play against my GF and her SWF in KYF and even when they run the most meta builds I still stomp on them as legion with no perks or addons. A lot of SWFs are a lot more casual than you think.

Do you have a source for your knowledge how SBMM is supposed to work?
In any case, my point is that it's obviously not working well for new players at all. There is nothing non sweaty about those perks. And they did try to play sweaty actually, but made mistake not to genrush.

Well, you were doing exactly the same thing as this swf

I honestly don´t know whats worse:
- new players facing experienced ones, because the mmr prioritizes short queue over fairness
- or experienced players smurfing to face new players.

Matchmaking? Lol wait until new players see the grind

The new player experience in this game is abysmal, you'd think BHVR would be embarrassed about it, but no.

He is correct. Don´t know exactly but the explained it i think in the last Q&A stream.
They admitted that the main problem of the system is no players available or the backfill because someone dodged or left the lobby.
In that case MMR is skipped and for the sake of time the next available player is taken.
And i do believe that - but - is it really a skillful system then?

If I were to start now and after seeing all the grind, I would have refunded it asap.

Obviously this 4 man swf was bad and just tried to use the Meta/strong perks without knowing how to play. Chances are their MMR is pretty low because of that.
also the MMR adjusts greatly in your first few matches as it tries to place you somewhere. You got a 4K on your first match against ‚real potatoes‘ (which might not even have been that bad) which obviously boosted your default MMR a little.
Also what has already been discussed, backfill lobby’s could also explain a mismatch and that’s something they have explained and try to improve on.

Most players have all purple perks...

Most new players don’t have all purple. And many players don’t have all purple meta perks. From the original post
1: Lithe, Self Care, Quick and quiet, Iron Will
2: Soul Guard, Unbreakable, Flip Flop, Boil Over
3: Balanced Landing, DS, Boon: Exponential, BT
4: Self Care, Iron Will, DH, Kindred
Look at number 2 for instance, that’s a player that has spent a lot of time getting four very specific perks built around the current “You can’t slug or hook me” gimmick up to purple rank. So no, that’s not a somewhat new player, they grinded a while to get that.

Well said 🙂

I've been dodging lots of lobbies lately, seems like the game keeps trying to match me with awful ping matches. I'm getting 60, then next match 140? I dodge and get 60 again, why didn't I get it in the first place?
If this is happening to lots of players, it might explain why MMR seems so bad. Maybe most bad matches are backfill rather than MMR, but it's happening more often than expected?

lol, I was a new player back in November. I bought the game SPECIFICALLY to main Michael Myers. I bought the game and Halloween DLC on the same day.
Didn't take long to start getting stomped on by 4 man SWF's with flashlights. Go through my post history to see me complaining about it.
Yeah I eventually grinded Lightborn, but the whole experience was enough to turn me off to playing Killer ever again.

Na, as an actual new player, the worst part of the game is the forum. I have played maybe 4 games as a survivor, and it's not really my thing (being dependent on others to carry their weight-even as a new player I can see walls, and avoid running into them-not so common apparently). So, I've put my time into killers which has been awesome. I'm very satisfied with terrorizing the survivors, and if that results in 1 kill, that's enough for me. For the record, my first game was as nurse, and resulted in a 4k (the last 4k I've had as nurse btw). Then, I found huntress. Fantastic gameplay since I mailed Hanzo in overwatch. I know if I win a game easily, the next will probably be harder. If I get stomped, and they all escape, then I'll play another where it is either a lot more even, or I stomp. I probably should've started this with: I'm an adult. So, all of the toxicity talk and whining is completely lost on me. I'm still having a great time playing.

Same here. That’s a crap load of hours you’d have to put in.

The purpose of the system is completely defeated when it ignores itself in favor of queue times. Then you just end up with terrible matches. Either use SBMM or don't, but trying to slice it both ways between queue times and MMR has led to awful games more often than not for outlier players.

When smurfing goes wrong vol 3.

A lot of people say things like "grade doesn't mean anything" or something similar earlier about the purple perks.
But the thing about grade is, and even moreso having a wide array of tier 3 perks, is that they are correlated positively with playtime, and experience/playtime is the strongest corollary of skill.
So while not airtight by any means, these things do mean something. If you go against a team or player who has unlockable tier 3 perks, odds are good that said player is not a potato, at the very least.

You say that the worst part of the game is forum, yet you still come here. Go figure...

True, what's the point to have quick game at the expense of fun.
0 -
Yeah, I doubt anyone with teachables has as little experience and skill as someone playing second match ever.
0 -
and the sad part is, the Killers at the top start to recognize the same names as the Survivors at the top, and some of the top Survivors SWF use team names in brackets, so it becomes easy to dodge.

I dodge SWF, unless I play strong killers. Sometimes I wonder who is the poor soul that gets my dodges.

People seem to be skating right past that one.
Seriously, is a 4k not enough anymore or something?
0 -
Yes, let's complain about winning

You entirely missed the point. Not sure if you even read it. I've been playing for over 2 years now. But this was a new account test playing second match ever. Killer with total of 10 minutes experience would get 0k against those survivors.
0 -
Did you even read it? This is not about winning or losing. It's about SBMM.
0 -
It's not about winning or losing. It's about balance. Most people wouldn't care if all 4 survivors escaped every round if the game was fun, and you felt like you achieved something. Right now the game feels like you lose when you get kills or not.
