Gauging who's ahead during a trial (rules of thumb)

I just started playing this game in January and am having a blast. I just learned about prestiging, and I think I will try to prestige a survivor.

Quick question. On average, what are some good rules of thumb for determining which side is "ahead" while you are in the middle of a trial?

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that the first hook and the first gen should happen around the same time. I also read that once there are only 2 gens left, one survivor should already be sacrificed. So if you're killer or survivor and fall behind that "pace," then you are trailing in the trial.

Thanks!

Yeah, I think you have about the right idea. Basically the game is set up so that if everybody is playing well you’ll have 1-3 kills at the end. Which means the gates will be open and people got out but not before the killer has killed at least one player. So the first couple of gens are the hardest for the killer to defend and you should expect them to finish fairly quickly, but by the time the first two or three are done the killer should have someon constantly on hook, be chasing someone else, and either have someone already dead or have enough hooks that multiple survivors are on deathhook. The situation to shoot for as a killer at 1-2 gens left should be the one survivor on hook, one being chased, one survivor rescuing the person on the hook and the last trying to complete the last couple of gens solo assuming all four are still alive.

I guess as a rule of thumb, if the number of hooks exceeds the number of gens done in the beginning the killer is doing at least ok enough to have 1-2 kills by the end. If they have around double the hooks as gens done then they’re maybe looking at a 4k.

The ideal thing to do is to get an early kill with about 3 gens left. Managing 3 Survivors is easier than 4. Let's get into a scenario.

4 people: You hook 1, you chase someone, someone goes for the rescue and the 4th guy is doing gens. You still have someone doing gens.

Let's kill someone as early as possible.

3 people: One is on a hook, you chase the other guy and the 3rd guy needs to rescue. Now there is a shutdown on gen progress. Getting rid of 1 Survivor as early is possible is the best thing to do as Killer.

As Survivor you want to spread hooks. If you see someone is dead on hook (you see it by the lines besides their names), you ideally wanna tank a hook state (if you're not dead on hook yourself) as we already said, getting a kill early is immensely strong for the Killer.

Edit: Also, happy for you that you're having a good time. Keep the Spirit up and enjoy the game. Don't stress yourself to much if a match doesn't go well!!!

If a Survivor is dead when there are more than 3 gens remaining, the game is usually over.

Unfortunately, win conditions vary from trial to trial. I got pretty good at calling them out when I saw them, but it's hard to say "X means you've won."
