Modding
Is modding ever gonna be back? like i feel that has been a huge part of dbd for the players that done that and i personally myself did it years back until it was removed and i dont know what has been the reason to remove it. i understand you could have mods that gave a competitive advantage but i feel something could have been done without completly removing it like have things like trapper's traps models being completly uneditable. I personally loved to play hillbilly without that annoying glow on the chainsaw and without the smoke coming out of it and many other mods that have been mostly not harmful to gameplay experience

As far as I remember the main reasons given were as you said to prevent competitive edges from being used, and the fact that if the anti-cheat bans you the devs cannot help with that. So simply recoloring the perks and such "can" lead to a permanent ban, although I've never heard of it happening.
Another reason I can think of is the consolers (like me) cannot use mods, and are by a wide margin the larger playerbase. Unlikely these devs will put time and resources into anything that isn't available across all platforms imo.
