Bringing Modding Back Safely

So I think it definitely could be possible to see a return of modding, I've read a lot of forums discussing this, and a lot of people have mentioned including an official steam workshop (however those are usually reserved for valve-made games). But I think it would be cool to see BHVR create an official modding website or app.

We all know how much everyone adores our cocktail generators 😅. I understand the concern of people using it for cheating, but I think having a moderated modding site helps negate some of the issues we had in the past. I think some things should be off-limits for modding, such as

-Killer items (Bear Traps, Jigsaw Box, etc.)

-Models (unless approved)

-Survivor sounds (I'd like to see the inclusion of voice lines, but it's just too risky to allow)

-Killer Sounds

-Miscellaneous sounds (Crows, Gen Repairs, Lockers, Totems)

But some things I'd love to see be moddable would be

-Killer Chase Music (this one's touchy but I'll talk about it later)

-Menu Music

-Lobby Music

-Cocktail Generators😎

-Loud noise notifications (generator explosions, spies from the shadows)

-Slight skin alterations, Such as the color palette change to Tricksters outfit.

Now on the controversy of killer chase music etc. I've seen some amazing music mods created, some very much more enjoyable than the default music, and with things like the legion music buff, it looks like a lot of people enjoy listening to Rockin music while they get chased by a vicious killer. I've heard before that chase music plays into balancing which is understandable, but I think BHVR can give us guidelines to what's acceptable and what's not acceptable when it comes to these scenarios.

The modding community was thriving, and I'd love to see its return! I believe moderating what is allowed to be changed and what is not allowed to be changed in the game's files is a safe approach to letting the community's creativity flow yet again. I understand a lot of people are gonna reply to this by mentioning how I have too much faith, or I'm being optimistic, but for those that are genuine, I'd like to hear your thoughts on what a moderated modding community could do for dead by daylight!

Cheers! 😄

Honestly, just let people flick a switch to enable modding, which makes you queue with other modders only (at an "at your own risk" kind of way)

Hey, I think that's a pretty neato idea, thanks for that input!

I like that music idea, but also I don't think it's such a waste, since it promotes welcoming a larger more creative community!

A steam workshop would be the best solution but that's a ton of work.

So you want to allow people to mod color pallettes on skins and don't see how that wouldn't be abused to make killers or survivors super visible by making all their skins show up bright pink or something?

Like that was the issue that existed before modding was removed.

And even considering chase music just means people are going to mod it out for an advantage.

You would need a moderation team to verify mods which would be a lot of resources for something that I don't think really adds much to the game with how restricted it would be just to prevent advantages.

If you want to mod games there are plently of games that do allow modding (mostly single player or co-op games where advantages don't matter too much). DBD is just not one of those games.

It would be the only way we ever get a decent Yui skin LMAO

I just don't see them diverting resources and time to support this on PC, let alone even more resources and time to make it work for the much larger playerbase, the consoles. I'm assuming you were not only considering Steam for this though.

I mentioned all these things in my comment, don't forget o mentioned the inclusion of moderation. also imo you can't really gain an advantage from chase music, if you make quiet chase music loud, you've just created unerving presence which is a disadvantage, and if you make the loud chase music quiet, you've made a stealth killer, either way you go, you're playing yourself, which is why I think it should be allowed

When It comes to things like NSFW. that can even be automatic, NSFW filters are very easy to create, and automatically strike down NSFW content. but also it should be noted that with allowing mods, you take the good with the bad, obviously there are a lot of NSFW L4D2 Mods but that's a very small percent compared to the amount of amazing mods that I've seen, I even have 3 that I posted myself!

I think only allowing it for steam might be a safer option, allowing it for epic games would be a lot more effort. from the feedback I've gotten spending resources on an external website is just not worth it.

so seeing the inclusion of a steam workshop of such is the safest option.

That's why I mention only allow certain files to be altered while some could result in a ban. so if you mess with killer items, that's a no no. no more bright pink bear traps right? allow music to be freely altered, but other files that could be considered cheating off limits. so that way the only moderation needed is for very specific things such as model swaps.

I doubt the devs would not include the biggest chunk of the players, those on the consoles.

Most games do, it's not new, it's pretty well understood that mods are a pc thing. even though it's possible on console, it's not usually worth the effort.

In Warframe community-made skins are actually available for premium in-game currency on consoles rather than steam funds. It is possible to include console players but I'm not sure how it would translate in DBD.

there are certain things that are off limits as in, it's very obvious they'd only be molded for competitive advantage. now this idea ALREADY exists. pc players are in fact still able to change perk icons no issue, things like that, where it could be fun customization such as music should be allowed just like the perk icons.

So bascially another opportinity to exclude console players even more.

    No thanks.

If you play on the private server some people made then you still can. It lets you install any mods you want and then queue up only with other people that have the private server enabled

Modders had the freedom to do stuff but they capitalized it too much and modding became pretty much cheating.

Yes please those videos of people replacing their models as an among us character looked dumb as hell

  • Pumpkinbros
    Pumpkinbros Member Posts: 425

dumb but funny! I also really enjoyed the ones where killers got turned into survivors, it's funny to watch someone like bubba be so athletic! and even the one where the trickster became a survivor he genuinely fits pretty well as one, so you hardly notice, don't know if it will be possible to get those back, but I'm hoping!

    Modding would be abusable.

Mod every Survivor to be bright yellow.

Mod Ghostface or Pig to be bright pink. Hell, mod Wraith's invisibly shimmer to be bright pink, so cloaking Wraiths are MORE visible.

Without a paid team to curate the mods; this would happen. Hell, even WITH such a team (which, by the way, costs BHVR money and has no income returning from); you can bet some people will find a way to mod their game without support, and do the above.

If there's an unlocked back door; thieves will open it.

You really just came out and demanded the devs give you a way to avoid buying cosmetics huh?

  • Pumpkinbros
    Pumpkinbros Member Posts: 425

I haven't demanded anything. I don't like you portraying that kind of attitude onto me, it was posted into general discussions so that people can discuss, also you're forgetting the inclusion of swapping out different skins so you still have to buy the skin to get the modded skin, if you didn't know that exactly how the trickster skin that I posted worked.
