Is it just me or does the audio in the game just not work very well?
Whenever I play killer I feel as if the noise survivors make when running throughout lots of doorways or behind objects is inaccurate. It especially sucks when playing spirit since you need to rely on sound to do well.
With spirit in particular it feels very inaccurate, especially on indoor maps like lerys. Survivors sound close when they aren't, and other times they sound far away when I am literally right on top of them.
On top of that I am pretty sure that survivors still don't make breathing noises when injured while having iron will active. It overall just makes precise tracking as a killer very difficult and misleading.

Spirit in particular shines a light on the audio issues in this game. You'll find very quickly just how much the audio differs from survivor to survivor and map to map. Certain survivors sound close at all times, others have a clear distance relationship. Some maps have really screwed up directional audio and occlusion. Throw in the absurdity of Iron Will and...yeah.

I have trouble tracking via sound in this game that I don't have in other games. The sound occlusion especially is all kinds of messed up, but even just normal directional audio is worse in DbD than in other games. I'll hear an injured survivor loud and clear one second, no idea where it's coming from, and then it's suddenly silent like they were never there. It has confused me and cost me precious time in matches.
The more I play other games that utilize sound, the less I think I'm the problem. It's DbD, specifically DbD.

Yeah the audio in this game is weird. Certain survivors can sound closer than they actually are, footsteps can sound louder and closer than they really are, and healing sounds are really quiet, almost non-existent. Bubba and Billy also have audio issues with their chainsaws.

Huh wow its almost like having perk tiers in the game only make things unnecessarily complicated, who would have thought?

The audio was fine years ago, and then the devs changed something, and killers haven't been able to rely on sound ever since. Whether survivors are too close to you or too far from you, you just can't hear em. Add to that Iron Will and stuff, it's like killers by design are supposed to track survivors with their eyes and guesswork alone.

I used to be a Cod squeaker who relied heavily on sound and I can say for 100% certainty that the audio is borked.
For how much we need it, it's annoying for it to be unreliable, especially now that Shadowstep exists.

The audio sometimes messes up for me as survivor too. Rarely, but has happened, when I get hooked the audio just keeps cutting off. Solves itself when I get unhooked.

You are not alone my friend. These audio issues are still a big problem and sometimes they are really annoying. I cant say how often I lost a chase cuz the survivor suddenly stopped moaning. Here and there I cannot hear survivors lying on the ground. Therefore I hear hooked survivors who are already sacrified. Many sounds are too loud (like sacrifices, burning garbage cans) and annoying for both sides. And BHVR should look at the different volume levels of certain survivors. This is one of the reasons why I dont like to play spirit and I would like to know how spirit mains handle this issue.

Yeah, this chainsaw sound bug is annoying. And you forget about huntress' wind up sound. I often can't hear her even though she's right behind me.

It was when they added sound occlusion. I remember it distinctly. You could hear gens from outside buildings, etc, so you only needed to be in proximity to hear whether it was active or not. Then they turned the occlusion on so strong to the point you literally had to be in LOS and touching distance to hear it... walk around a doorway and suddenly no gen. Then they balanced that out a little more but it was never like before.

Same, for survivor it is different. However it doesn't have too much of an impact on survivor gameplay. Sometimes I still make groaning noises for a second after being healed.

Such a shame still. You used to, as killer, be able to tell exactly where survivors were by listening to their footsteps and breathing through walls, and I can only assume that elevated the skill ceiling for survivor just like how it did when people learned to counter pre-nerf Spirit, because they'd learn to be tricky and strategic with the sounds that they made and at what times. Sadly I don't see killer ever going back to that.
