I agree. This game started out being fairly enjoyable. But since the embracing of bullies and cheats has happened, this game gets harder and harder to waste time playing. The blame falls completely on Behavior and the culture that they have cultivated.

I think I figured it out. The area I was in didn't lead anywhere so I just wandered around a bit. I went back to where the little (girl?) is mining and singing and I could butt bomb through that spot now, leading me into an entirely new area!
I had found most of these things just lead to secrets and/or powerups so I hadn't gone back there yet since it was so far out of the way. But I ran out of other areas to try to explore so I figured I might as well.

For the most part I've enjoyed the game. The part that I don't care for is something I knew I wouldn't going in (backtracking and getting lost) so I've accepted that as part of the game and just try to push through it.
Everyone can hug Holly! Although when I brought her home, she hid for four weeks before she was willing to let me see her, let alone pet her so you might have some work ahead of you to do 😅

Ahh, one thing you can do to solve that is using the Map and Wayward Compass
it makes backtracking far easier :)

Currently camping is the easiest most cheesiest strat to pull off as killer. Something that the devs acknowledge and have said are looking into.
So what I would say is anytime someone face camps you, think about that. The length at which they had to go in order to get that one kill.
